Managing your Grey Poupon - Crystal Clear Communication

My wife wasn’t really big on the end of this video... Can’t please them all. ;-)

What I can say is I know how crucial it is to make sure your communication is Cristal!

I mean... impressions matter. Whether asking for Grey Poupon ...

Or you are interviewing for a job.

Or Interviewing someone else for the job.

I remember going to a long interview day in a company polo once... and a candidate looked at me and said, “Oh, must be nice to come casual to an interview.”

Obviously, initially... I was a bit taken aback. Fortunately, the candidate wasn’t interviewing with me. Not sure my ego would have been impartial...

And the point struck home. I was setting an expectation. I was making an impression. What is acceptable, how should we dress for sales meetings, how do we dress as leaders?

I mean... not like I was wearing sneakers,

Though that is definitely my current favorite shoe choice.

A friend of mine has a new job as a manager at... ummm.... Mooby’s. They were having an issue with employees arriving late. My friend brought this up to the GM, the GM brought it up at their next team meeting... AND when told they should not be late anymore, one employee asked, “How late is late?”

The manager answered... more than 15 late is late.

Look... I’m not one who NEVER bends the rules...

But if you don’t set a standard and keep that standard, you have no standards. Literally

If it’s OK to show up 15 late, just make that the schedule.

Because when you allow 15 late... then what else doesn’t matter?

And who does that hurt in the long run?

You? Your people? Your company? Your pay check? Their pay checks? Your family? Your future success?

Their family? Their future success? The success of their children?

Your people deserve a manager who fights to uphold standards through properly set expectations and challenges them to achieve greatness.

If you are a leader, This isn’t just about you.
