Managing Work and Study

Managing Work and Study

Studying and working simultaneously can be a daunting task, but it can also have several benefits for your future. Apart from financial gain, it can help you make new contacts, gain new skills, and acquire great recommendations. However, balancing both work and study can be challenging. Here are five tips to help you as a working student.

  1. Embrace your calendar - As cliche as it may sound, creating a schedule can be very helpful. It's important to note down and have a proper schedule, whether it's for an important meeting at the office or a college group discussion. This will help you stay on track and declutter your mind. You can use Google Calendar or a daily planner to jot down your schedule.
  2. Adjust your schedule every semester - Every semester is different. Some semesters may be tougher than others, and you may need to pay more attention to your studies during core courses. During semesters with fewer courses, you can take up more hours of work. Sticking to the same schedule every semester may not work in your favor. It's also good to switch up your schedules to break the monotony.
  3. Communicate - It's crucial to let your employer and professors know about your schedule. Explain why both work and study are important to you and let them know that you won't jeopardize one for the other. Ask for their assistance in helping you maintain this balance.
  4. Stay proactive and plan ahead - Break down your project or assignment into small steps or goals and tick them off as you achieve them. This will ensure your work or assessments are of better quality, reduce your stress levels, and help you perform well in both your job and studies.
  5. It's okay to take a break - Even if you're studying a subject you love and working in your desired industry, there will be times when you feel overwhelmed or want to give up. It's essential to take a break and communicate with someone. Mental health should always be a priority. As my managing director once said, "We are not robots. Remember, we are human."

Lastly, don't forget to appreciate yourself. Pat yourself on the back for trying hard, even if no one else sees it. Remember that you're doing a great job!
