Managing Up and Managing Down
There's no doubt that becoming the leader you want to be sometimes feels like a lot.
My client who was wrestling with this had a massive penny-drop moment when she realised that managing up wasn't just saying yes to her boss all the time.
In fact the complete opposite was true.
She was inadvertently undermining her authority by seeming permanently available. And she was frustrating her boss (who was a good and effective leader) by not holding firm on boundaries.
Add this to the fact that she was also trying to look after the people in her team by shielding them from some of the rough and tumble of business.
She was wanting them to not feel discouraged when some tricky feedback needed to be delivered.
Instead she was trying to get better results from the team by hinting and implying instead of being direct.
Your team can sense that this sort of stuff is going on. It increases their self-doubt and actually slows down their development, and them becoming the high-performing team that everybody wants.
Are you holding on to things like this in your role?
What is stopping you getting into your stride as a leader?
