Managing Up is a Career Killer
I’m excited to share my TEDxCSTU talk on a topic that is very close to my heart—"Why Managing Up Can Kill Your Career." Throughout my career as a C-level executive since 2005, where I’ve collectively managed over 100,000 people, I’ve been asked time and time again to talk about how to manage up. I’ve spoken at companies like Google, Visa, Intel, and Moody’s, and I always share the same message: the concept of managing up can backfire.
In this TEDx talk, I discuss why aligning up is far more effective than managing up. I also dive into how you can build win-win relationships with your boss, your team, your company, and your customers—ultimately leading to your own success. I summarize 9 practical actions that you can apply to align up, build trust, and become a promotable candidate in any organization.
I’d love for you to watch the video and share your thoughts! Let me know what resonates with you, give it a thumbs up, and leave a comment on how you plan to apply these strategies in your career.

Thank you for your support and for helping me spread the message that alignment, not managing up, is the key to career success.

1 个月It’s always a rewarding experience to engage with Elizabeth's coaching content. Her insights in this TedTalk remind me of my time working under her leadership, particularly a memorable moment from the IC days. As part of a proactive effort to analyze and resolve customer escalations, I spearheaded a product enhancement that successfully addressed critical pain points for several customers. While it wasn’t a direct manager ask, it fulfilled an organizational need for customer success. Months later, to my surprise, this initiative earned me an Appreciation Certificate—initiated by a leader in the hierarchy?who recognized its value, and signed by Elizabeth, who was a C-suite executive in my company at the time. This experience shows the importance of aligning with organizational goals and contributing value. When we do, results and recognition often follow naturally. And even if rewards don’t come immediately, I’m reminded of the wisdom from the Bhagavad Gita: "You have a right to perform your duty, but not to the fruits thereof." In other words, focus on doing your best work without attachment to the results, trusting that success will follow in due time.
