The Facts: "Kim's" manager, "Daniel" is jealous of Kim. Because she's killing it and was recommended for promotion. He's tried [unsuccessfully] to undermine Kim by making comments about her "you're not a team player" and fake-concern, "maybe you're working too hard."
The Ambush: Daniel asked Kim to meet. Daniel didn't tell Kim that he also invited "Mike", who is Daniel's boss. Daniel starts criticizing Kim [not a team player, too demanding, etc]. Kim maintained her composure. And showed documented evidence (which I had told her to keep track of) of her performance, the team's performance, how she helped team members.
Then she sat back and asked Daniel for specific examples of how she's not a team player. Daniel couldn't. The meeting ended. Later on, Mike apologized to Kim, saying he didn't know what the meeting was about and said Kim was doing a great job.
The Win: Kim was promoted. Daniel was big mad. ????
The Change: Kim's now leading a new team. Because she wasn't putting up with Daniel's crap anymore. Mike knew if Kim couldn't change team, she would quit. Mike didn't want that because Kim's work makes him look good, too. But, Kim knows to stay ready to get another job at all times. Don't get comfortable.
Navigating haters is an important professional skill. It's not about wondering why they don't like you. Duh. Losers are jealous of greatness. It's about neutralizing losers as you continue to shine.
