Managing team conflicts?

Let me tell you, being the boss isn't always sunshine and rainbows.

One of the hardest parts is trying to keep your leadership team on the same page when tensions start flaring up. You've got a group of high-powered personalities, all with their own ideas and egos, and you want the best. But, sometimes ... well, things can get messy.

I had a situation when co-founders were at each other's throats over the direction of the company. Worse, it was like a family business. When one wants to play it safe, and the other is all about taking big risks. Meanwhile the rest of the team got caught in the crossfire. It dragged down morale and productivity.

As the CEO, I knew I had to step in and do something, but it wasn't easy. I could feel the stress piling up. I had to resist the urge to throw my hands up and let them punch it out. But I also knew that if I didn't get a handle on it, it could spiral out of control and bring the whole company down.

So I took a deep breath or two. I could see their points, but some of it was settling old scores. I brought everyone together for an honest, no-holds-barred conversation. I listened to each of their perspectives, and validated their concerns. Then I helped them see the bigger picture. It wasn't about winning or losing, or fixing the blame. It was about finding common ground and figuring out how we could move forward as a united front.

It took some work, but we got to a place where everyone felt heard, respected, and committed to the same goals. Once we resolved that tension, it lifted the weight. It re-energised the team, ideas were flowing, and we started focussing on business again. Maybe we all enjoyed the little bit of tension, but out of control it's a killer.

Managing conflicts at the top is no joke. But it's also an essential part of being a leader. You can learn to navigate those tricky waters, and bring people together. Find working solutions, and you can unlock a whole new level of success for your business.

Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty and do the hard work. Your team and your company will thank you for it in the long run.

Such a common issue with co-founders Lynsey Gedye In my work as a systemic relationship coach this is something that comes up regularly. It's about finding what people agree on, rather than where they don't agree. Once there is common ground moving forward is possible.
