Starting a new job can be both exciting and daunting.?
The anticipation of new challenges, colleagues, and responsibilities can often lead to increased stress and anxiety.?
However, with the right strategies, you can effectively manage these feelings and transition smoothly into your new role.
Before Starting a New Job
Gather Information:
The more you know about your new role, company culture, and expectations, the better prepared you'll feel. Research the company's website, mission statement, and recent news. If possible, connect with current or former employees to gain insights. Another idea is to complete a “dummy” run to the office, to familiarise yourself with the location and journey.?
Practice Self-Care:
Prioritise your physical and mental well-being during this transition. Ensure you're getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and engaging in regular exercise. These activities can help reduce stress and boost your resilience.
Visualise Success:
Positive visualisation can help build confidence and reduce anxiety. Imagine yourself excelling in your new role, overcoming challenges, and forming positive relationships with your colleagues.
Time Management:
Create a schedule to balance your job search activities with relaxation and self-care. Avoid overwhelming yourself with too many tasks at once.
Seek Support:
Talk to friends, family, or a mental health professional about your feelings. Sharing your experiences can provide emotional support and help you develop coping strategies.
Managing Stress and Anxiety While on the Job
Set Realistic Expectations:
Understand that it takes time to adjust to a new job. Avoid setting overly high expectations for yourself, as this can lead to unnecessary stress.

Time Management:
Effective time management skills can help you prioritise tasks, reduce workload, and prevent feeling overwhelmed.
Learn to Delegate:
If applicable, don't be afraid to delegate tasks to others. This can lighten your workload and help you focus on more important responsibilities.
Practice Mindfulness:
Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can help you stay present and reduce stress.
Build a Support Network:
Develop positive relationships with your colleagues. Having a supportive network can make your workplace experience more enjoyable and less stressful.
Also, no questions are stupid questions and asking your team can break down any barriers and make interactions more comfortable - it’s important to remember that everyone has been in this position and most likely asked similar questions to the ones you have.
Set Boundaries:
Learn to say "no" when you're feeling overwhelmed. It's important to establish healthy boundaries and prioritise your well-being.
Seek Professional Help:
If stress and anxiety are significantly impacting your work or personal life, consider seeking professional help from a therapist or counsellor.
By implementing these strategies, you can effectively manage stress and anxiety before and during your new job.?
Remember, it's normal to feel overwhelmed at times, but with the right approach, you can navigate this transition successfully and thrive in your new role.
