Managing the Scaling Journey for Online Businesses & Tech-Enabled Service Providers

Managing the Scaling Journey for Online Businesses & Tech-Enabled Service Providers

The most interesting thing in my life is often that I exist in two worlds that are compartmentalized

A service provider to growth-stage tech companies and the tech-enabled business world that is the online coaching & consulting world that is part of the knowledge economy which I will always credit with making me the growth hacker that I am today who understands marketing.

Because, unlike the B2B attitude that I often see from people in the tech space, I have been that marketer who had to learn to run ads, create automation, create content, edit videos, do the graphics, write copy, set up the funnels, and all the backend things that happen since these businesses are agile first and as someone on those teams whether you are leading or not, we had the attitude that it was all hands on deck

Above all, I have been privileged to see the different cogs of businesses, and being able to see inside businesses gives you a different perspective than the highlighted reality you see in newspapers, magazines, and on social media.

So, in this edition, I take you behind the scenes of the work we do to build a predictable revenue pipeline & operations for clients' businesses in 6-12 months to help grow their revenue profitably by at least 30% without the founder being responsible for sales and marketing, all while introducing Business Process Automation to improve the business systems.

But, I also share some of my observations on what I am noticing from entrepreneurs, especially female-led companies, and their fear of scaling the business.

The most interesting thing is that in the knowledge base and digital product economies, at least 60% of these operators are women.

I find that it is important that conversations on how women can grow valuable companies is really important.

When you get on the investor side of the table you understand why we need more wealthy women, more women with the capacity to write cheques because even Jessica Alba was denied funding for her business until the VC went & spoke to his wife and she told him it was needed.

So this is important so we can stop being dismissed when pitching for funds as we will have more female angel investors or funds helping women innovate, & create a better business world that ensures the community benefits.

A few months ago, a number of you high-fived me for my dear tech founders segment where I pulled Techpreneurs' edges and called them out on their ish, hopefully, you can take the same heat knowing it comes from a place of love

The Trap in The Knowledge &Digital Product Economies When Starting an Online Business

The digital age has ushered in unprecedented opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs to launch online businesses and capitalize on the growing demand for knowledge and digital products.

However, amidst the allure of quick success and passive income, there lies a trap that many newcomers to the knowledge and digital product economies often fall into outside of the common trap of harboring unrealistic expectations regarding the time and effort required to achieve success: The Solopreneur Trap

While the idea of running a one-person business may seem liberating, many solopreneurs underestimate the challenges of going it alone in the knowledge and digital product economies. The reality is that building a successful online business requires a diverse skill set, from product development and marketing to customer service and financial management.

When the business suddenly starts to hockey stick, things get so busy that businesses find themselves in dire need of manpower, they resort to hiring out of desperation.

This often occurs when there's a sudden influx of work, jeopardizing operations.

In such situations, the urgency to alleviate the workload or fill essential positions can override the thoroughness of the hiring process.

Consequently, these solopreneurs rush to onboard individuals without thoroughly assessing their qualifications, skills, or cultural fit.

This leads to hiring decisions based solely on immediate needs rather than long-term strategic alignment.

The reality is that while hiring out of desperation will provide short-term relief, it will ultimately result in mismatches, decreased morale, and additional challenges down the line.

This is when they realize the Freedom Fallacy

What Is The Freedom Fallacy

The "freedom fallacy" is a phenomenon often experienced by entrepreneurs who embark on their journey seeking autonomy and independence, only to realize later that they may have gained location and financial freedom, but remain at the mercy of their business.

Initially, the allure of entrepreneurship lies in the promise of being one's boss, setting one's schedule, and enjoying flexibility in work and lifestyle choices. However, as the realities of running a business set in, entrepreneurs find themselves tethered to their businesses, constantly juggling responsibilities, and facing the pressure to sustain and grow their enterprises.

Despite having the freedom to work from anywhere and control their financial destinies, they become acutely aware of the demands and uncertainties inherent in entrepreneurship.

From managing cash flow and handling client expectations to navigating market fluctuations and staying ahead of competitors, you soon realize that true freedom comes not from escaping the constraints of traditional employment but from mastering the art of balancing autonomy with accountability to a systemized business.

Let me illustrate this with this example of an independent consultant who decides to leave their corporate job to pursue a career as a freelance consultant in their field of expertise.

Initially, they relish the freedom and flexibility of being their boss, setting their schedule, and choosing their clients.

However, as they immerse themselves in their new role, they realize that their autonomy comes with its challenges. The consultant must continuously hustle to find clients, manage their workload, and deliver results to maintain their income stream.

They soon find themselves handling administrative tasks, such as invoicing, marketing, and client communication, which detract from billable hours. Additionally, the consultant faces the pressure to stay relevant in their industry, keep up with market trends, and continuously upgrade their skills to remain competitive.

While they enjoy the freedom to work from anywhere and control their financial destiny, they experience a unique set of challenges and pains as they navigate the journey of entrepreneurship.

One of the most common challenges they encounter is the constant uncertainty of income and workload.

Unlike traditional employees who receive a steady paycheck, consultants must continually hustle to secure projects and clients, leading to fluctuations in income and periods of financial instability.

This unpredictability can cause stress and anxiety as consultants struggle to balance their financial obligations with the need to maintain a steady stream of work.

They then have to deal with the isolation that comes with working solo.

Without the camaraderie and support of colleagues, they feel lonely and disconnected, especially when faced with challenges or setbacks.

Additionally, they lack access to the resources and infrastructure provided by larger organizations, such as IT support, administrative assistance, and professional development opportunities.

All this leads to feelings of self-doubt and imposter syndrome as they navigate their entrepreneurial journey alone.

On top of all this, there is the pressure to constantly prove their value and expertise to clients.

They must continually demonstrate their skills, knowledge, and experience to win projects and retain clients, leading to a constant need to stay relevant and up-to-date in their field.

This pressure can be exhausting and overwhelming, especially when combined with the demands of managing their business operations and delivering high-quality work on tight deadlines.

The Fear of Scaling The Business

Numerous challenges plague businesses in service-based and tech-enabled industries, hindering their peaceful scalability. Because it takes already so much work to get to multi 6 figures, now when someone tells you to scale, you look at all the work you are doing and think of doing 5-10x that, of course, you bulk at it.

So, let's discuss it.

Firstly, service businesses often lack scalable systems, heavily relying on human resources, which can strain employees compromise quality without proper processes in place, and have the founder trapped as the revenue bottleneck.

Secondly, the complexity of service delivery, particularly in specialized or customized services, poses difficulties in standardization, hindering replication across a broader client base.

And then, implementing tech solutions for scalability introduces challenges like compatibility issues and user adoption hurdles, further complicating the process. Human resource constraints, market saturation, financial management issues, and leadership challenges exacerbate these hurdles, contributing to a tumultuous scaling journey.

Addressing these obstacles demands strategic investments in technology, efficient processes, employee well-being, and customer satisfaction.

By proactively tackling these factors, businesses in these sectors can enhance their prospects for peaceful and sustainable scaling.

The Truth About The Profitable, Sustainable, & Freedom-Based Business

Speak to an online business coach, a young man starting an agency, or a software engineer who left their job and is landing those contracts to build the MVPs for startups, and they will tell you that they desire a simple, profitable business that offers personal freedom and creativity without the need for a larger team, and this is understandable.

However, this approach they are on may not always lead to the desired outcome due to several reasons.

Without a team to support and scale the business, there's a limited capacity for growth, potentially leading to burnout and decreased productivity as the workload becomes overwhelming- The Freedom Fallacy.

Many do attain a level of financial and location freedom, but they start feeling chained to their businesses, but no time freedom at all, and are chained to the business and it requires a lot from them to keep the business going.

Additionally, lacking specialization and expertise hinders innovation and addressing complex challenges, while inefficient use of time and resources will result in focusing on low-impact tasks instead of driving growth.

Marketing, sales, growth, and the vision of the company are dependent on you, and that can be draining and lead you to burnout, thinking of either burning the business

At this point, achieving work-life balance becomes difficult without a team to share the workload, and resistance to delegating control will limit growth opportunities.

Prioritizing self-development is crucial for effective leadership and team building, but failure to do so also hinders success.

On the hiring front, mistakes have contributed to dissatisfaction and the opposite outcome desired.

Hiring for convenience over fit, lack of clarity in roles and expectations, ignoring red flags, neglecting cultural fit, failure to provide adequate training and support, and micromanagement have all led to a less-than-optimal team dynamic and hindered business success.

So, take a minute to reflect on these mistakes and address them so you can improve your hiring processes, build a stronger team, and create a more fulfilling work environment for yourself and your employees. This is something we support you to do in our accelerator Brand2Scale

The Hiring Bottleneck & Quagmire

The mess was created because of the psychology of hiring often revolving around the immediate needs of the business, which typically involve finding individuals who can help execute tasks and fulfill day-to-day responsibilities.

This mindset often leads to hiring individuals who are proficient at "doing" rather than seeking out experts who possess an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to innovate from within the organization – what we might call "intrapreneurs."

By primarily hiring doers and followers, rather than intrapreneurs or experts, business owners may inadvertently limit their team's capacity for innovation, strategic thinking, and long-term growth.

While doers are essential for executing tasks and maintaining operations, intrapreneurs bring a unique set of skills, ideas, and perspectives that can drive innovation, problem-solving, and business development from within the organization.

There is also the lack of an integrator.

Without a dedicated general manager or operations lead to integrate and oversee day-to-day operations, business owners may find themselves constantly pulled back into the minutiae of running the business.

This can lead to feelings of resentment, frustration, and burnout, as they struggle to delegate effectively and manage their workload while also supporting and guiding their team members.

To address these challenges, you should prioritize hiring individuals who not only excel at executing tasks but also demonstrate a proactive and entrepreneurial mindset.

Investing in talent with diverse skill sets, expertise, and leadership potential can help foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the organization.

Additionally, appointing a capable general manager or operations lead to oversee day-to-day operations can provide you with the support and bandwidth you need to focus on strategic initiatives, business development, and personal growth.

By empowering your team members to take ownership of their roles and providing them with the necessary support and resources, you can create a more sustainable and fulfilling work environment for yourself and your employees.
