As remote workers enjoy global connectivity, employers face increasing challenges in maintaining control and ensuring security over corporate networks. Here’s a closer look at the key issues and actionable steps for businesses to stay ahead.
Regulations: Navigating Global Data Privacy
Data privacy regulations vary widely, with 137 out of 194 countries having enacted legislation. Regions like the UK, Europe, America, Canada, China, India, and Australia enforce strict standards. However, enforcement differs significantly elsewhere, necessitating clear guidelines on permissible work locations for digital nomads.
These regulations often restrict data flow across jurisdictions, requiring adequacy agreements between countries to ensure mutual recognition of data protection frameworks. While some agreements exist, others may require additional safeguards for data transfer, complicating compliance efforts.
Security: Addressing Remote Work Challenges
Remote work introduces significant challenges in securing access to corporate data, often relying on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). However, VPNs can be vulnerable to exploitation due to weaknesses in authentication and encryption. To mitigate risks, VPNs should be properly configured, regularly patched, and updated, adhering to the principle of least privilege.
As mobile devices become essential tools for remote workers, ensuring their security is critical. Yet, a concerning trend shows organisations becoming less vigilant in managing device use. According to an Apricorn survey in 2023, only 14% manage remote work risks through software controls, down from 41% in 2022. Additionally, 48% of organisations report data exposure incidents due to remote workers' actions, and 46% indicate a perceived lack of concern for security.

Encryption: A Declining Practice
Organisations should prioritise encrypting their data to safeguard against device loss or compromise, with hardware-based encryption being the preferred method. However, there’s a troubling decline in data encryption practices across laptops, mobile phones, USB sticks, and portable hard drives compared to previous years. This decline is largely attributed to confusion surrounding data location, encryption requirements, and security policies.
What Can Companies Do?
To ensure robust security in a remote work environment, companies should implement the following measures:
By implementing these strategies, companies can better navigate the complexities of remote work, ensuring both security and compliance in an increasingly connected world.
