Managing the Intelligence Function

Managing the Intelligence Function

There are many texts and education programs dedicated to helping intelligence analysts develop their tradecraft. Not as much out there on how to manage the intelligence function. I have been thinking about this topic a lot lately as we prepare to go through a wholesale change of intelligence leaders when the new Presidential administration comes into office.

This textbook was the first to provide guidance on how intelligence function is most effectively managed. Unfortunately, good analysts are often promoted into management roles without any advice, support, or training to take on the role. This book can help.

Written by our friends Neil Quarmby and Lisa Jane Young, two Australian experts with decades of experience, this book aims to support intelligence managers to shift their focus from the delivery of products and advice to leading analytical staff, leverage of resources, establishing organizational structures and connecting with clients.

Managing Intelligence: The Art of Influence’ is solidly grounded in theory, but has been written as a practical guide for those in law enforcement, national security, the regulatory sector and the private sector.

Key themes include the capability, models, people and processes required to support those in the business of making tactical, operational and strategic decisions and the transformation of intelligence into practical value for those in decision-making roles.

‘Managing Intelligence: The Art of Influence’ is available from major book sellers and further information is available from - https://www.managingintelligence.com/ - or contact LJ Young on Facebook.”

Intelligence is all about influence, whether collecting, collaborating analytically or briefing decision makers. It is also a team sport, requiring good coaches and staff—jobs that frankly not everyone is suited for. Thank you, Barry, for highlighting this contribution to the community. Look forward to reading it.

Agree. Never seen such a published title. It would be interesting to read to get the Australia-specific view. I do remember a defector view of GRU titled “Inside the aquarium” that was facinating, and a two book effort by a former Mossad agent.
