Managing immediate aggressive confrontational situations effectively.

Knowing one self-defence move or thousands does not guarantee the ability to predict an attack. Soldiers and police officers who have experienced chaos can attest that once a confrontation begins, pre-planned techniques are often discarded. Training for a specific response to a specific attack may not suffice; it is the natural instinct that often prevails. An ongoing attack is dynamic, constantly evolving, and can result in serious injury or death. The belief that a single "magic" technique can defend against numerous varied attacks is dangerously misguided.
Developing the skill to spontaneously improvise and adapt strikes or holds from any position with power, accuracy, and balance is far superior to depending on choreographed techniques learned in a dojo or gym. My system Sphere Combat emphasizes improvisation, survival, and escape over-elaborate acrobatic manoeuvres or regulated sport fighting with a referee. Sphere Combat acknowledges that grappling or attempting to control an aggressor increases the danger for every second of contact.
My Close Quarters Combat (CQC) system is designed to harness natural responses to stress rather than trying to alter instinctive reactions to sudden actions. Such conditioning can only be attained through training or practice under these specific conditions. In reality, if you're caught off guard and must respond to a sudden surge of movement indicative of immediate aggression, your reaction will likely be one of two: either you'll flinch to make yourself a smaller target, or you'll flinch and jump away from the source of aggression.
?
A good illustration of this is the natural reaction to an explosion: one may flinch, leap, and possibly fall to the ground. It's important to note that I am not disparaging traditional styles, which often advocate for straight backs, upright stances, and rigid blocking skills. ?????? However, in reality, the most effective combat strategy is to harness and refine your instinctual responses. These are the foundational elements of my Close Quarters Combat (CQC) system, which I developed to counteract aggressive actions unexpectedly and effectively, rather than relying on tactically flawed techniques that go against natural human reactions to sudden threats and are unlikely to yield favourable outcomes in actual combat.
?With over five decades of continuous training, thirty five years of which I have also spent instructing in close combat, I remain deeply concerned that practitioners struggle with becoming tactical, managing their aggression, and controlling adrenaline surges. ?????????????? This challenge is not exclusive to novices; it extends to advanced practitioners and instructors alike. It seems that when faced with a threat or during testing conditions against a formidable opponent, individuals often discard all caution, pushing themselves to their physical and psychological limits. This behaviour is extremely risky.
I have assessed and evaluated numerous combatants during training and real-life situations who tend to exhaust themselves early on and, when confronted with a formidable opponent, struggle with extreme fatigue shortly thereafter. A tactically astute combatant should maintain readiness before any encounter and achieve objectives with controlled aggression, yet also be capable of de-escalating to a state of readiness or a non-tactical demeanour post-encounter. The issue mentioned above may stem from stress, inattention, laziness, or a combination thereof, or perhaps a lack of psychological and physical control.
The principle is straightforward: train and practice under the assumption that you will face wounds, injury, fatigue, dehydration, and challenging terrain while facing an aggressor intent on killing you. Our Sphere Combat mindset greatly increases your chances of survival in combat.
