Managing Energy, Not Time: A New Approach to Work-Life Balance

I’ve been stewing on a paradigm-shifting post by Olena Bomko that I read recently.

Her point: We all DON'T have the same 24 hours in a day.

??????

While I’ve known for YEARS that energy (not time) management is the key to creating a life of harmony, I’d never heard it put this way. So simple. So brilliant. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why true balance can’t be about counting hours but about making the hours count by paying attention to and honoring the cycles of our energy.

Why Manage Energy? Time is uni-directional. It constantly marches forward. I can’t go back. I can’t reclaim old minutes. But energy flows, fluctuates, and fills us in waves and cycles. There is a give-and-receive inherent in energy (if we pay attention to it). And by tuning into our energy levels and aligning our tasks with our highest states of vitality, we can empower both our productivity and our well-being.

Because it can’t be about just getting through the day, dragging our carcasses over the 5 o’clock “finish line”, and numbing out until we get up and do it all over again tomorrow.

(I know you know what I’m talking about.)

It’s gotta be about systems, cycles, and ways of being that provide us with the energy and capacity to have/do/be what we want most!!! (Burnout not required.)

How Can You Start?

  1. Recognize Your Peaks and Valleys: Pay attention to when you feel most vibrant and when you need a pause. Align your most demanding tasks with your energy peaks for maximum efficiency and enjoyment.
  2. Create Rituals That Recharge: Integrate small rituals that replenish your energy throughout the day. Whether it's a three-minute meditation, a brief walk, or a moment of creative expression, find what lights you up and weave it into your schedule.
  3. Listen and Trust: When your body speaks, listen to what it has to say. This goes beyond leveraging your peaks and valleys. This is about being in constant conversation with your body so when it gives you signals, you act. Pee when it says pee. Eat when it says eat. Rest when it says rest. And by all the gods, PLAY when it says you need some fun in your life.
  4. Set Boundaries with Grace: Learn to say “no” or “not right now” with kindness—to others and yourself. Protecting your energy is a sacred practice that enables you to bring your whole self to all you do.
  5. Reflect and Adjust: At the end of each day, reflect on what tasks drained you and what activities replenished your energy. Use these insights to fine-tune your approach, crafting days and weeks that honor your natural rhythms.
