Managing Change

Managing Change is pretty much like conducting an orchestra. The music to be played is written down in detail, and yet, no two conductors will perform the piece identically. They have, like change managers, their signature.

In 30 years, I have not seen a Change that has been designed with the same level of detail as a piece of music, and that’s probably for the better. But it does make the outcomes less predictable. Predictability is helped by understanding that the degrees of freedom are ample, but also limited. The conductor has limited choice over the instruments needed for a specific musical performance. And every Change requires its own unique combination of instruments to be successful.
