Managing breath is a clue to managing life!

Did you know that the breath and the mind affect and reflect each other?

The Rishi-scientists of ancient India discovered this secret of mind management through breath, while modern medical science is yet to scratch it. 

Consider these two situations :

- When the mind is restless or stressed, the breath is shallow and rapid.

- When the mind is calm and focused, the breath too slows down.

In deep Meditation/Samadhi, the breath actually becomes nearly still or completely still - and one can come back from that state any time, to breathe again.

But our objective here, as managers/executives, is to just control the mind and its restless thoughts, to raise concentration and focus, and reduce unwanted, stressful thoughts. Slow, deep breath actually soothes the heart too!

Yogis, by using the mind-breath relationship get a handle on the mind which otherwise usually behaves like a drunken monkey, and they achieve calming of the mind through breath, at will.

That’s the super-science of Yogic Pranayama, which literally means managing Prana or Life Energy. Some people misunderstand Pranayama directly as breath control, it is actually controlling Prana through the agency of the breath.

Prana or Life Energy is the link between consciousness and matter!

Through Pranayama, you can do the following -

* Reduce weight and burn calories,

* Prevent strokes and heart attacks,

* Beat anxiety and depression before they beat you,

* Cure diabetes and hypertension,

* Weed out bad habits through formatting the synapses (brain-circuits), and

* Relieve stress.

Let's look at it very scientifically. The mind's CPU is the brain; without a good processor no computer can work well, and the mind is already more than a supercomputer! The brain needs oxygenated blood to work properly, and when we don't breathe well enough, the brain starves! When the CPU has erratic power supply, can even the best software run properly? Prana, operating through the medium of breath, is to our body like proper supply of electricity is to a house or factory.

Besides, without adequate oxygenation, even the heart, already very hard-working, is a really poor thing!

Indeed, if we can breathe well, we have already done half the job of living well!

Let us go deeper and also consider meditation: It cannot happen without calming and focusing the mind, so in yoga one does Pranayama before meditating - this is recommended at least until one gets very advanced and go into deep meditation in a jiffy. Most people can't.
