Managing - beyond 2020
When the dust finally settles on this Coronavirus battlefield, who knows what collateral damage it will have caused to our human psyche!
Despite some assertions by his stream of devotees, not even Nostradamus really saw it coming; none of us here now can possibly predict when it will ultimately end. We can but speculate on how long we must suffer the hardship it is already causing; we can but wonder how many aftershocks we must endure before it has run its course.
What we do know though, is that this prolonged period of self-distancing, home-detention, and workforce-isolation will ultimately take its toll on our how willing and comfortable we are interacting with one another. In virtually every aspect of our lives, our “interpersonality” will forever change; certainly, across the workforce, it will never be quite the same again.
For several years now, I have been concerned – perhaps even obsessed – about the unwanted side-effects of this wonderful new world of technology transformation. Despite delivering amazing communication efficiencies and unlimited real-time access to knowledge, this era of so-called Digital Disruption is wreaking havoc on our ability to communicate face-to-face. Sadly, our deep-seated interpersonal skills have been slowly disintegrating.
During 2019, obviously unaware then that Covid-19 would soon arrive to deeply intensify the situation, this concern of mine prompted me to take the step of revising my original 2010 publication entitled “the KNACK of Selling”, and to release a beyond-2020 edition of it. Although the content retains its focus on commercial buying, selling, negotiating, and leadership skills - the quintessential sales manager’s handbook - it essentially deals with our all-round ability to deal with each other … to develop and maintain meaningful relationships.
Far from rendering the content obsolete, the pandemic has even further highlighted the call to arrest this trend, to immediately take all possible steps to ensure our workforce not only retains these vital life skills, but develops the wherewithal to effectively adopt them to the changing conditions which lie ahead.
