Managing Anger: A misunderstood ally

Managing Anger: A misunderstood ally

Anger is an incredibly useful yet largely misunderstood emotion. From an evolutionary standpoint, anger is triggered when we perceive a threat or injustice towards ourselves or our next of kin. It prepares us for action. However, in our modern and complex social structures, literal fighting or passionate displays of force are not appropriate responses. In our day-to-day lives, anger needs to be navigated through, channeled, and mindfully discharged.

So, the next time you feel a surge of anger, physically remove yourself from the situation and consider these actionable steps to help manage this powerful emotion:

  1. Hold and observe: Look at, hold, and name five things around you. Focus on their color, texture, and other details; say them out loud if you can.
  2. Engage Your Senses: Smell something pleasant, like a perfume or a cup of tea or coffee. Pay attention to the notes.
  3. Water Therapy: Place your hands in water and feel the temperature. Splash your face with cold water. Hold a piece of ice until it melts. Notice how it feels.
  4. Hydrate: Drink water slowly and deliberately - one sip at a time.
  5. Deep Breathing: Practice deep stomach breathing. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold, and exhale through your mouth. Focus on your breath for at least a minute or two.

With these simple practices, you can transform the overwhelming ferocity of anger into a more manageable and constructive force.

Well written Shraddha. My perspective slightly differs because of my own analysis of anger. I realised that the outburst of anger was seldom on the actual situation, the situation infact was more of a trigger. Origins of anger lied in repressed emotions and my own helplessness to express them at the right time and place. So while consciously separating oneself from the trigger helps, the real work lies in understanding the repressed emotions and find a meaningful outlet to them.

Good point! I appreciate learning the steps to take to calm one's temper, mentioned. Although I have a query , why is anger still considered useful when we clearly have to control it and not act upon being angry.
