The influence of managers on the mental health of their team members is a critical aspect that cannot be ignored, as their leadership style and behaviours can either uplift or undermine the psychological well-being of employees.
The Workforce Institute UKG Survey (2022) highlights a striking reality: managers have a profound impact on employees' mental health, comparable to that of their spouses, as reported by an impressive 69% of workers. This statistic underscores the importance of managerial relationships and the emotional climate that leaders create within their teams. Furthermore, the survey reveals that the influence of managers extends even beyond that of healthcare professionals, with 51% of employees indicating that their manager's approach affects their mental health more than their doctor, and 41% reporting a similar effect in comparison to their therapist. This data illustrates the powerful role that managers play in shaping not only the work experience but also their employees' overall mental health landscape. As such, organizations must recognize this dynamic and invest in training and resources that empower managers to foster a supportive and mentally healthy workplace.
