More often we tend to mix these 2 roles when we hire a Team Manager. By default we expect them to lead the team. While some managers can do both and vice a versa it's important to note that they both are distinct roles, but often overlap in various ways. The main difference lies in their focus and approach.
Managers typically have a more formal and structured role. They are responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating resources to achieve specific goals. Managers often work better within established systems and structures, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. Their authority is derived from their position in the organizational hierarchy.
Leaders, on the other hand, focus on inspiring and motivating people. They may not necessarily hold a formal position of authority but can influence and guide others through their vision, charisma, or expertise. Leaders often challenge the status quo, foster innovation, and create a sense of shared purpose among the team.?
While the roles are different, a good leader can also be a good manager, and vice versa. In many situations, effective leadership and management qualities complement each other. Some individuals naturally embody both managerial and leadership traits, contributing to the success of their teams or organizations.
Are you expecting your managers to lead the teams and Leaders to Manage them? Assessing them and setting the right expectations is necessary for success of any organization; else it will lead to failure and eventually exit of the person.
