Manager to Sr Manager?

Manager to Sr Manager?

The race up the leadership ladder is common to all industries. Once you reach the manager level, the senior manager is the next obvious aspiration. While the next step may not seem very far off, there might be some roadblocks in the way. In fact, the journey from a manager to senior manager is filled with pitfalls that pull back many potential leaders. What is it that actually prevents managers from becoming senior managers?

Commanding respect instead of inspiring it

To begin with, most managers command the respect of their team and expect their members to treat them regard. However, if you seek to rise to the position of a senior manager, you need to move beyond these expectations. You ought to inspire respect in others and not command it because of your positions. Most managers that fail to become senior managers are the ones who are unable to become role models and inspire others.

Focusing on managing programs rather than designing and implementing them

Next in line comes the fact that managers manage programs, while senior managers design and implement them. A manager's key responsibility area revolves around ensuring that any program/ project/ task in question moves smoothly, without any glitches. A senior manager, on the other hand, not only manages such programs but innovates them in a way to make them more efficient and effective. Thus, a manager who has not been able to reach a senior managerial position might be due to his/her lack of ability to add value to processes and products.

Blaming rather than taking responsibility

If something goes wrong because of your team, do you blame the person behind it, humiliating them publicly or do you take responsibility as their leader for their actions? Well, if your personality is more towards the former, then this might be the reason preventing your transition to a senior management role. Senior managers don't play the blame game when crisis strikes. Rather, they back their teams and take ownership of any mess. If you're a step away from having your team's back, you're a long way from becoming a senior manager.
