Manager as a coach/mentor for the Best Team Performance.

World is changing very fast. Old directive approach doesn’t work anymore. For the Project Leaders ability to change is critical for success. How to be that leader who helps their team or stakeholders to reach the goal and at the same time stay productive and have personal energy and motivation. There are the philosophy and tools how to be the leader not just a manager.

  1. Believe in your team: every person has all opportunities to reach their goals. Manager as a leader should share this believes with team and motivate them. All people who has mentor noticed one similarity: mentors believed in his mentee.
  2. Build trust relationship with your team. Create the open environment, find ways to know better each other, use coaching techniques.
  3. Stay focused on your goal and learn your team be focused. Train this skill, implement techniques which help to be productive. GROW-model could help to be focused on the meetings, during important negotiations or to have personal meeting with your colleague.
  4. Give positive feedback: focus on goal, not the problem. Identify lessons learned, but not blame. Stay positive and support. There is psychological research which shows that positive people are happier and get better result. You can use some principles of constructive feedback such as for any negative comment you can tell several positive first or before giving the feedback you can ask what this person thinks about.
  5. Ask questions rather than talk. So that you can teach team how to cope with their problems by themselves and take responsibility. There are some principles and examples of questions for practicing and implementing in real life (open, simple questions which stimuli our brain)
  6. Listen deeper than words. Try to understand what team really thinks, notice gestures, changes in behaviour, mimics. Analyse how much time do you usually speak and listen. If you speak more than 20% than you have field for improvements.

Besides listed principles there are a lot of tools and techniques which helps to be more productive at work, to reach your goals and finally to be happy. There is the whole profession “Coach” who can help people to be more effective, to get results faster. And using coaching techniques could help to be the real leader and to develop yourself.
