Everyone knows that times are challenging currently with fuel prices, political instability, wars in the Ukraine and in general, the 'news' is quite negative.

This is impacting most businesses when it comes to their success, either directly or indirectly. Why? Because business is all about people!

Every element of business is based around emotion - the emotions of the team and being able to influence the emotions of the potential buyers to do business with your organisation.

And, that is where the complications with management arise. There are so many distractions and outside influences currently, that are impacting most businesses and not in a good way. Your teams are looking for more certainty in work as they cannot get it from other areas of their lives currently. 

What I see all of the time is the fundamentals of management are being lost and it is impacting the business, as management have forgotten they are dealing with human beings. Which often leads to: teams leaving, increased recruitment costs, high sickness rates.

Everyone means well but they deliver poorly as the management fundamentals are often lost or overlooked so the business is built on poor foundations. It is not that the management are bad people, they just don't have the necessary tools.

So many businesses need to build their foundations strong and from my experience, not many are doing that. I say that because, having nearly 40 years management experience, either directly or working with organisations, the patterns are still the same now for many organisations as they were 40 years ago. They are missing out on the fundamentals of management, and that is focussing on the 4 D's with the Impactful Management Formula:

Decisions: When you think about it, the decisions you make impact the action you take and the results you get. The drawback is, for many businesses, the decisions being made aren't from a place of strength. they are from a place of fear and dread. Fearing the consequences of that decision, dreading what is going to happen, etc. These decisions should be made from a place of strength and confidence to get better results.

Destiny: The destiny of the organisation is built around the quality of the decisions. Poor decisions = poor results and likewise, great decisions = great results! Therefore, the business will either perform well or poorly, and this impacts everyone.

Quite often, even if the previous two 'columns' are performing well, the next two 'columns' are not given the attention they need. Whilst development has always been important arguably, these are more important now than they ever have been. Times have changed since lockdowns as there is a greater need for more support for the teams.

Develop the Team: Developing the team is so important as the need to learn new skills, be refreshed with their current skills levels but also, creating a strong unit of togetherness. The ideal is that every team member will support and look after the person standing/sat next to them so they can be their best as well. This doesn't happen on it's own, it needs to be nurtured and worked at.

Develop the Individual: We are obviously all different and have different needs. That is why it is not good practice just focussing on the team. When you develop the individual well (I don't mean just throwing on a training course here), the rewards can be limitless. To them as an individual, the team, and also the business.

When you get all 4 'columns' working effectively, your business then has the strong foundations it needs and as you can see from the diagram, 'the roof' is pointing upwards. When you master the 4 D's, your business is headed in the right direction with all the team working as one towards the common goal - business success!
