Co-relationship between Project Managing and Effective Leadership

Recently did a small survey to seek thoughts of Project Management professionals on relation between Management and Leadership!!

Here are some of the key responses shared by professionals (quoting with their kind permission):

“Leadership sets the vision; management helps in fulfilling that vision.”

“Managers can run a team whereas a leader can create and transform a team.”

“Leadership decides what needs to be done. Management decides how to do it.”

“Leaders are focused on long term planning and strategic goals, while managers are focused on daily operations and short-term planning”

“Leadership is about to have a vision for betterment, improvement and initiative, management is about to manage the system, people according to situation to run the show"

….

Isn’t Right kind of and effective Leadership needed for Managing a Project/Portfolio/Program/Organization Effectively? Then, whether they are Project Management Professional or a CEO / a President of an Organization!!!

For example, leadership is not about forcing decisions, rather

  1. Showing support, compassion, coaching and mentoring for low performers / new members of the team/peer group to deliver a difficult assignment on time is an example of leadership.
  2. Helping team by removing impediments through effective conflict resolution, decision making, prioritization etc. as part of the project/program/portfolio/scrum/agile delivery is also an example of leadership.
  3. Drive to enable excellence and productivity though connecting resources with project / program/organization vision and mission and providing them suitable opportunities to grow and excel.

In a Nutshell, leadership is ingrained into managing a piece of work effectively and realization of vision, goals and objectives. So, Project / Portfolio / Program Leadership is one of the key skills and competencies that Management professionals require in a right equilibrium and need to switch hats between different leadership and management styles, as per the assignment in hand.?

Both Management and Leadership go hand in hand and are sides of a Dice, which makes Efficient Managers, along with other skills and competencies.
