INTRODUCTION:
Mahabharatam is one of the great Indian Scriptures which has taught many management lessons. It is the story of the battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas. Lord Krishna, is the main hero of this scripture known as the master strategist, a great visionary leader and a good path maker. In the battle field, Lord Krishna preached Bhagvad-Gita to Arjuna which contained many management lessons.
Let us see some of the management lessons from Mahabharatam.
1. USING SCIENTIFIC SKILLS AND TECHNOLOGY
Kauravas have used some inflammable material in the Pandavas palace in order to destroy them. They have also used some scientific weapons in the battlefield. It was believed that this battle really happened in the ancient age to (withstand) Justice (Dharamayudham) in the world.
Like this, every organization must need to use technologies wisely in order to improve their business. They must also need to upgrade themselves in this changing business world.
2. EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP SYSTEM
Kauravas has adopted a centralized system of leadership and has only one leader. They have 11 divisions. On the other hand, Pandavas has adopted a decentralized system of leadership in which Lord Krishna was the supreme guide and Arjuna was the supreme commander. Pandavas had 7 divisions and each division was headed separately from one of their family members. At last, Pandavas won the battle.
Like this, Centralized system of leadership will not yield effective results. Organizations must need to adapt a decentralized system where the management responsibilities will be distributed at each level which yields better work performance.
3. BETTER ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
Pandavas hierarchy demonstrates that the dependence of each individual and risk on each individual is low. But on the other side, Kauravas need to depend on their leader for their command. This is also the key factor for the failure of Kauravas.
Like this, top management of the organization needs to share their responsibilities to the middle and low level management executives for the effective implementation of policies and procedures in the firm.
