Management & Leadership
I was asked what is the relationship between management & leadership recently. I replied instinctively,
"Memorable managers/leaders incorporate both."
Management is about the process of directing, coordinating, and overseeing the performance of a business or organisation from a top-down approach. It's about the logistics around getting things done.
On the other hand, leadership is the speciality of motivating others to take actions that produce higher-performing individuals & teams within an organisation.?
A person needs many skills to be able to do well at both. However, an essential trait is assessing whether or not people are happy or satisfied at work. Being empathetic is a given, right??
Yet, far too often, I meet managers & leaders who do not have this skill, depending on their support team (managers, team leads, HR, etc.) to compensate for their deficiency. Of late, it's been so common that it's lead me to question,
"Is being empathetic required to be a good manager/leader?"
