Leaders who Teach and Learn

I enjoy working for a boss who is a good teacher.? Taking time to explain or demonstrate how to complete a task is really an investment in someone’s career.

I found that in most organizations bosses like this had a history of developing staff, who received more responsibility and became future leaders. Consequently, employees often clamored to work for someone like this.

Teaching skills aside, the more effective leaders I worked with were good listeners.

They knew why and how to listen.

Knowing why to Listen is key.

Good leaders know that the more senior their position, the harder it is to obtain accurate information about what is going on in their organization.

This is because of the natural tendency to filter information and report only good news.

To be effective, these leaders knew they needed additional sources of information beyond their official channels.

Knowing how to listen required creativity.? Who are the other sources and how to engage them?

Two things I saw them do:

  1. Talk with customers and employees – They went out of their to engage those receiving services and employees who delivered the services.? They asked and then listened to the answer to “What’s working and what’s not?” ? Understanding bad news, instead of shying away from it, was always revealing.
  2. Field and answer unfiltered questions from stakeholders – They engaged stakeholders regularly and transparently, using questions as another source of information to identify current issues.? They were unafraid of aggressive questions, took time to explain, and most importantly answered the question versus deflecting or talking until the question was forgotten.

It took energy and focus to do this, but I learned this skill was an important differentiator amongst top leaders.? ?

With more information, and information that more accurately allowed them to understand the situation and events, they made better decisions.? This is why they were more effective.

Bottomline

Leaders who are good teachers create future leaders

Leaders who are good listeners make better decisions.

This article is a HUGe reminder for me as I do leadership training and talk about "training"... I think I will shift that word to "Teaching". Knowledge transfer, to me, is the most important catalyst in organizational success. Teaching is the sail the powers the boat. Great input Paul!

We need to discuss those who are absolute JERKS too. I QUIT a good paying JOB because the Manager would pinch me on my Butt till it caused bleeding spots and he always told me my wife had called looking for me from a Motel after I got in from a Field Job in the Oilfield for days. He loved treating people as his own play toys. But one Black worker he messed with went to a Federal Agency and I testified about Jerk Boy Manager and the Black man got money put in his pocket. I loved the work until he came to our Office. He was special. And he told me people were just like automobiles, when they break down, you get yourself another one. Once, a worker put a message in a bottle and they threw it in the Trinity River. A month later, a man called and the Manager came into the break room after getting off the phone-Simeone just called me saying he was a Black man and wanted to meet me so I could suk him off. He said he heard I loved Big Black Men with big packages. He said he found my name and number in a bottle floating. The Break Room erupted in laughter. Lol
