There is a Living Legend in the Liberian community. His name is Robert "Rocky" Schwarz. This year 2023 he has been honored by Teachers College Columbia University & Cathedral Student Alumni Association for his lifetime dedication to service. He is an example of what it means to be real in a world that wants us to be plastic.
He answered JFK’s call when he said “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country” Rocky responded by going into the Peace Corps. He is a living example of the Liberian motto "The love of Liberty brought us here."
At a young age upon graduation from Brown University. He traveled to Liberia to work in education and eventually became a vice principal of Cathedral school where he met my father who he adopted & brought to New York City.
His impact influenced entire generations of Liberians who migrated to the USA. He started the Cathedral School Alumni Association. He has funded the education of countless Liberians who have become success stories. His life has affected over 500+ Liberians across the globe. This is the only grandfather I know & he introduced me to a life of service. I dedicate this article to my Grandpa Rocky.
He never gave up on the hope for a better Liberia. He has been a mentor to award winning authors, NFL football players, college professors, etc. If there is a famous Liberian in America....Grandpa Rocky knows their family personally. He is a benevolent gatekeeper and a connecting force for all things good. Grandpa Rocky opens his heart without expecting anything in return. I want the world to know who Grandpa Rocky is.
