Man in Japan arrested for creating virus using generative AI systems
A 25-year-old unemployed man from Kawasaki has been arrested for allegedly creating a computer virus using online interactive generative artificial intelligence (AI). This is believed to be Japan's first case involving the creation of viruses with generative AI systems.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) apprehended Ryuki Hayashi on May 27 on suspicion of producing electric or magnetic records with unauthorized commands. Investigators believe he used his home computer and smartphone to compile information on malware creation obtained from various generative AI systems in March 2023.
The virus he created was designed to encrypt data on targeted systems and demand cryptocurrency as ransom. However, no damage has been reported, according to the police.
Hayashi admitted to the charges, stating during questioning, “I wanted to make money through ransomware. I thought I could do anything if I asked AI.”
Despite platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT implementing measures to prevent criminal-related outputs, some online interactive AI systems still provide unrestricted information that can be exploited for illegal activities, sources say.
Hayashi allegedly provided instructions to the AI systems while concealing his intention to create a virus, obtaining the necessary design information for encrypting files and demanding ransom. He also reportedly searched online for methods to acquire information illegally. The MPD is investigating the functions of the generative AI he used.
In March, Hayashi was arrested on suspicion of fraud for fraudulently signing up for a smartphone SIM card. During the investigation, police discovered a homemade virus on his computer and other seized items. – The Japan News/Asia News Network
