Malta Digital Nomad Visa - A Complete Guide

The aim of the Malta Nomad Residence Permit is to grant Non-EU nationals the right to live in Malta for a limited period of time whilst working remotely using telecommunication means.

For whom is the Nomad Residence Permit (Malta Digital Nomad Visa)?

The Nomad Residence Permit Malta was made for Digital Nomads and Remote Workers. You must first and foremost be a Non-EU national and reach a gross monthly income of €2,700.

You must also prove that you fall under one of the following categories:

• ?Have a work contract for an employer that is registered in another country other than Malta, or
• ?Be a partner/shareholder in a company that is registered in a foreign country, or
• ?Offer freelance or consulting services to clients, whose permanent establishments are in a foreign country, and with whom the applicant has contracts.

You’ll also need to have:

• a valid travel document
• health insurance to cover risks in Malta
• proof of accommodation

The application fee is €300 and you’ll need to pass a background check. If you intend to add dependent family members, you can do so by paying an extra €300 for each member.

Benefits of the Malta Nomad Residence Permit

A Nomad Residence Permit (Malta Digital Nomad Visa) is issued for one year and the holder may apply for renewal of the permit not later than one month prior to the expiry of the existing permit against a fee of EUR 300 per applicant. Nomad Residence Permit holder may stay in Malta on this basis for a maximum period of 3 years.

It’s also a Schengen Visa. This means you have the freedom to explore other European countries (that belong in the Schengen area for a period of 90 to 180 days) with the same visa.

You’re allowed to bring along your family or your partner. You can apply for the visa online and the decision is made within 30 days of applying.

Nomad Residence Permit holders will not be subject to personal income tax in Malta since their employment is already taxed at origin and the permit is a temporary basis of stay.

Application Process

If you’re interested in the program, the first step is to submit your application to?Residency Malta Agency ?along with all documentation. You will need to specify your duration of stay and state if you’re planning to stay in the country either between 91-180 days, or 181-365 days.

If you’re planning to stay in Malta for up to 180 days, you’ll be issued a National Visa. If your intention is to stay in the country for up to 365 days or more, you’ll be provided with a Nomad Residence Permit (Digital Nomad Visa Malta).

Forms

• Fill in the N1 Application Form (typewritten) and sign
• Fill in the N4 General Data Protection Form and sign

Intent Letter

• Write your letter of intent. Explain your motivations for moving to Malta and applying for the Nomad Residence permit

Paperwork

• Copies of your passport’s each page (including blank pages)
• If you’re employed by a company: Your employment contract that shows your obligation to the company and proves that your duties can be performed remotely
• If you have your own company: Certificate of incorporation, memorandum, and articles of association; share register; register of directors
• Your Europass CV or similar
• Statement from your bank, showing your source of income in the past three months
• Proof of accommodation. If you’re not residing in Malta yet, this can be done after your application has been approved
• Health insurance policy covering risks in Malta. If you’re not residing in Malta yet, this can be done after your application has been approved, too
• Sign a health declaration stating that you’ll pay for the expenses which aren’t covered by the health insurance policy
• Marriage certificate if you’re adding your spouse. Make sure that it’s apostilled
• If you’re adding family members, add their birth certificates. Apostille and legalization are necessary
• If you’re adding a dependent over 18 years of age, add an affidavit of dependency
• Award of custody/guardianship (if applicable)
