Malta Digital Nomad Visa - A Complete Guide

Malta Digital Nomad Visa - A Complete Guide

You already know that we’re fans of remote working and digital nomadism being embraced by private companies as well as by the public sector. It makes us happy to see governments designing solutions to welcome digital nomads into their countries.

That’s exactly what Malta has done with the Nomad Residence Permit which is the official Malta Digital Nomad Visa.

The aim of the Malta Nomad Residence Permit is to grant Non-EU nationals the right to live in Malta for a limited period of time whilst working remotely using telecommunication means.

Malta attracts many foreigners who are attracted by the island’s lifestyle and climate. English is Malta’s official language making it easy for non-Maltese nationals to communicate.

The island also offers a great internet connection, plenty of co-working spaces, an international airport, and an already well-established digital nomad community.

Benefits of the Malta Nomad Residence Permit

A Nomad Residence Permit (Malta Digital Nomad Visa) is issued for one year and the holder may apply for renewal of the permit not later than one month prior to the expiry of the existing permit against a fee of EUR 300 per applicant. Nomad Residence Permit holder may stay in Malta on this basis for a maximum period of 3 years.

It’s also a Schengen Visa. This means you have the freedom to explore other European countries (that belong in the Schengen area for a period of 90 to 180 days) with the same visa.

You’re allowed to bring along your family or your partner. You can apply for the visa online and the decision is made within 30 days of applying.

Nomad Residence Permit holders will not be subject to personal income tax in Malta since their employment is already taxed at origin and the permit is a temporary basis of stay.

The obvious benefit is that you get to live in Malta and experience a European island lifestyle. Malta is a very small island in the Mediterranean, almost 80 km south of Sicily and 284 Kms east of Tunisia.

It has a population of a bit more than half a million inhabitants on the archipelago consisting of 3 main islands, Malta, Gozo, and Comino. The capital Valetta is the smallest capital in Europe.

It’s a place full of rich history and you will see Greek, Roman, Arab, British, Italian, and French influences on food, architecture, and language.

Even though it is an independent state, the island culture prevails in Malta, making the whole environment quite relaxed. It has amazing beaches, rock pools, and cliffs that will take your breath away.

What are the options for after 3 years? I’d like to buy property somewhere in Europe and Malta looks like a good option, but 3 years is not long enough to justify that, I am a Uk passport holder.
