Malt Tech Trends 2021: Data is a great way to give Choice
People are ready. I can feel it in conversations with freelancers, in client meetings and while watching people enjoying their first ice cream at Ballabeni in Munich.
We are ready to beat this virus and take control of our lives again. We are ready to transform and leave things in the past. In other words: We are ready for the future!
To support our freelancers and clients in making the right decisions for the future, I am happy to announce that our 2021 edition of the Malt Tech Trends is being released today.
Giving choice is our job.
Since the beginning of Malt, when Hugo and me founded the company 8 years ago, we have put the community at the core.
The Malt Tech Trends 2021 is no exception. This report is a unique exploration of the data of our marketplace. Analysing company needs on the demand side and freelancer availability on the supply side allows us to understand market tension and forecast trends to be aware of.
We do this to give our community the tools and information they need to make the best choices for themselves. This data belongs to them and it is our job to give it back.
Information is power
Freelancers working in the IT and data sector can use this report to get an overview of the most in-demand skills and choose the next skills to learn.
For all those who manage digital projects in their companies as CIOs, CDOs, IT managers, or innovation directors we provide a source of information to identify emerging technologies and plan their talent pipeline accordingly.
In this 2021 edition you will find:
1. The latest technological developments: The Malt Quadrant on programming language evolution
2. The 4 most important trends in IT: no code/low code, native applications, cloud and microservices
3. The impact of Covid-19 on tech talent: freelancers remain optimistic
Unsurprisingly, the covid19 pandemic and rise of remote work has spurged the migration to the cloud, reducing the demand for Sysadmin and DBA system management professionals and increasing on the other hand the demand for Cloud Engineers, where we can already see a talent shortage today.
We also included our Malt Quadrant again, looking at the evolution of programming languages each year. For example we can see Python as a clear winner this year - after years of close competition with Java.

And while you’re at it, I recommend you to listen to this song to put you in that can-do-spirit of spring.
We chose it as our official Malt Tech Trends theme song :) After all we are a company with a passion for Karaoke, so choosing theme songs for our releases might become a thing from now on!
