International collaboration is a valuable means for nations to work together and combine their strengths towards achieving their space goals. By sharing the costs and risks of space exploration, countries can achieve more together than they could individually. This type of cooperation allows for the exchange of resources and expertise, leading to more ambitious missions and scientific progress. International collaboration also fosters a spirit of goodwill and mutual respect among nations, paving the way for a more prosperous and peaceful future.
In February, Scottish Development International in partnership with the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA), Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), and Malaysian Investment Development Authority organised and successfully delivered Scotland’s first flagship Space Trade mission to Malaysia - Malaysia Technomart: Scotland Space Go-Global Innovation Conference 2024, held at MIGHT Partnership Hub.
We were grateful to have this event in the presence of David Wallace , UK Deputy High Commissioner, British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, and Francine Torbett Deputy Country Director Malaysia – Trade, Department for Business and Trade.
With 22 Scottish delegations and 2 prestigious Scottish Universities along with 60 Malaysian participants consisting of 6 government agencies, industries, and Malaysian prestigious Universities; the two-day event was a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral relations and fostering cooperation between the two nations. The program was held for the first time specifically for the space sector which became a pivotal platform for Malaysian and Scottish space industry players to establish strategic cooperation.
The event brought together a diverse range of strengths, including advanced technological expertise, exceptional research capabilities, and unparalleled logistical and manufacturing support. By combining these resources, collaborative projects can achieve more than any single country could on its own. Both nations firmly believe that international cooperation in space activities leads to a richer, more diverse scientific output. By bringing together different advanced scientific knowledge and perspectives on approaches, research, and findings can be enriched to achieve unprecedented breakthroughs. The event highlighted the mutual benefits of international cooperation in space, and both nations are looking forward to continuing their collaboration to achieve common goals.
The Successful Path Forward
The outcomes of the implementation of this program have identified as many as 9 commercial projects with great potential to be developed through strategic Private-Public Partnership collaboration, both countries cover aspects of the development of based solutions satellites in the fields of communication, agriculture, and positioning (3 projects), provision of launch and operation services (3 projects) as well as joint satellite technology research and development academic side (3 projects).
The most advanced manufacturing technology in the field Space was also identified as a potential strategic collaboration based on the availability of the uprising strength in the semi-conductor for Electrical and Electronics (E&E) industry in Malaysia.
"This program is timely when Malaysia is actively developing the country's space industry in a planned manner, competitive, in addition to empowering knowledge transfer and improving the development of local expertise." ...........as quoted during the keynote opening speech by the Director General of the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) Mr. Azlikamil bin Napiah.

25 – 27 March 2024: Malaysia Reciprocal Visit to Scotland
During the visit of MASIC - Malaysia Space Industry Consortium and key stakeholders representative to Scotland, a strong commitment towards furthering bilateral ties and strengthening the relationship with Scotland's space industry cluster was displayed. The meetings were held with the objective of fostering cooperation and promoting mutually beneficial between the space sectors of Malaysia and Scotland. This marks the beginning of a promising journey between both entities in the industry.
Effective collaboration in the field of global space commercial activities can present a range of opportunities and challenges. The continued success of international cooperation in space is contingent upon nations being able to strike a balance between these factors. By cultivating a harmonious atmosphere where shared aspirations and mutual advantages pave the way for collective exploration, countries can ensure productive and enduring partnerships.
Malaysia remains steadfast in its commitment to working collaboratively with Scotland to achieve shared objectives, and we are confident that together we can achieve great success in the space industry. Rest assured that significant progress has been made on the positive healthy pipeline between both nations. However, there is still more work to be done, and we are actively working towards completing it.
We have full confidence in Muhamad Nurazmi and his team for their remarkable efforts in securing this unprecedented success that has brought immense benefits to both our nations. Their hard work and dedication are truly commendable. Thank you too to Azlikamil Napiah , Dato' Kamarul Muhamed , and Rushdi Rahim for such excellent leadership and warm hospitality!
?? Keep an eye out for further updates.……..
