Malawi: Is this the beginning of Civil War?
Today, the largest ever national demonstrations took place across the country. The organisers wanted 3 million people on the streets to demonstrate peacefully. The issues were in regards to the irregularities of the May 2019 tripartite election. Many people believe the elections were rigged. Based on social media videos and images it is easy to see that hundreds of thousands, perhaps even millions showed up to protest. However due to the riots and disruption that sometimes occurs (and actually did occur in parts of Lilongwe), business basically ground to a halt.
Not closing shop would have meant being looted for some businesses and some property being damaged. As a proponent of "peaceful" demonstrations as I believe the organizers intended these to be, one can not help wondering where Malawi is headed. Is this "The Malawi Uprising"? Are these the beginnings of civil war? Will we come out of this better than we are? These are the big questions I can't stop thinking about. One may even wonder how much these demonstrations cost our nation, economically. But the more pressing thoughts most of us have are personal: will my loved ones be safe where-ever they are during these turbulent times?
As someone who is pro-demonstrations yet terrified of these times, I wonder what those against demonstrations feel. Are they ready to listen to the voice of the people?

5 年I am a USA citizen WHO lived and worked as a management consultant trying to help with economic development throughout Malawi for 12 years from 2006 until 2018; and saw the country deteriorate on a daily, monthly and annual basis; morally, ethically, economically, and most importantly WITH REGARD TO CORRUPTION...…. at EVERY level of society!!! Corruption is accepted as "THE NORM OF DAILY LIFE TO SURVIVE" IN Malawi, AND THE GOVERNMENT LEADERS (DPP/PETER M. AND HIS CRONIES) are to blame for this. They KNOW THIS AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE Uneducated AND IGNORANT POOR RURAL farmer MALAWIANS. So very sad. I am embarrassed and humiliated that MY COUNTRY (USA) SPONSORED peter m. AND EDUCATED THIS MAN? AT A TOP UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. His behavior is sickening and leadership non-existent. I find this man and his cabinet of cronies APPALLING. As an American who lived in such a beautiful country with such beautiful;? hard working people, TO KNOW FOR A FACT that their leader (APM) AND CO-WORKERS recently "RIGGED" THE ELECTION IN HIS FAVOR TO GET RE-ELECTED. LIVED IN my country, The United States of America, for over 20 plus years and was educated here; and learned NOTHING ABOUT ETHICS AND COMPASSSION TO HIS FELLOW MAN OR WOMAN AND RESPECT FOR own HOME COUNTRY of Malawi. IT'S A DISGRACE. He is simply just lining his pockets with CASH RIGHT NOW WAITING TO LIVE A GOOD LIFE IN sa OR ZIMBABWE OR the UK, and go underground as if he has done nothing wrong. He is another ROBERT MUGABE. in my humble opinion, Malawi IS ON THE BRINK OF A CIVIL WAR !! African Union, are you listening to the people and seeing what is happening in Malawi? What Are you doing to AVOID A CIVIL WAR? United Nations, are you listening and watching? European Union are you watching? Transparency International where are you? Rec Cross. where are you? WHAT ARE YOU ALL DOING TO HELP avoid a civil war in Malawi??????? I am sickening by the apathy involved by the powers that can help avoid bloodshed and death !!! RISE UP LEADERS from around the world? OR MALAWIANS WILL BE FIGHTING A CIVIL WAR SOON !!!

5 年If not addressed expeditiously; this may just be that final ingredient for a civil war recipe as the parties in conflict don’t see an amicable resolution.
