Caregivers, do you ever feel like you have no time to care for your own health? It's completely understandable; you're busy taking care of your aging loved one! So, how can you make sure to live a healthier and more active lifestyle even though there's little room to squeeze anything into your schedule? The American Heart Association shares their advice.
1. Get up and get moving!
If it's been a while since you've exercised, don't hesitate to start small. For example, you might walk around your neighborhood for 10 minutes in the morning or during the evening. You might also enjoy doing light yoga exercises to get your day started. Whatever you choose to do, know that exercising is a great way to reduce stress and boost your energy levels!
2. Eat heart-healthy foods.
It might be easy to pick up fast food every once in a while; however, the high levels of fat and sodium in these foods aren't beneficial to your health. The American Heart Association mentions that if you must eat on the go, it's best to choose nutritious snacks (fresh fruits or low-calorie granola bars are good options). When it comes to eating at home, try to prepare healthy but flavorful slow-cooker meals ahead of time that can easily be reheated before dinner.
3. Go out when you can.
If your loved one is able to have someone look after them, try to take this time to go to local events, shop at the mall, visit friends, or simply run errands. Get in the healthy habit of leaving home for at least a few hours a week so that you can get some much needed fresh air!
The American Heart Association shares more ways caregivers can live a healthy and active lifestyle. If these tips seem too challenging for you, just take one day at a time. It takes practice, but you can achieve your goals!
