MAKING WAVES IN OPEN WATERS
Joshua Ashley (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Computer & Information Sciences in Application Development (BCAD) The IIE's Varsity College Durban North) placed third in the 5km and 10km races at the recent annual South African Open Water National Championships held at Marina Martinique Jeffery's Bay.? He placed fourth overall.
Said Ashley: “It felt good to be back in the open waters. I had flu leading up to the race and had to decide whether I should pull out for safety. Part of me couldn't let that happen, so I kept my focus and decided to continue swimming my entered races. I overcame the negative to finish third in the country for both races. It demonstrates that your mind is stronger than what you believe your body feels.”
Currently Joshua is training for the South African University Games and possibly the South African Short Course Championships that will be taking place later this year.
The South African National Open Water Swimming Championships is the country's main open water swimming event of the year, with races including the 3km, 5km, 10km, and 4x1500m relay races.
?It is a celebration of the swimmers' hard work and dedication, and those who have put in the effort are rewarded with podium medals and potential selections for South African teams competing in international races.
