Making a time lapse of the computer screen
Recently had my first time experience with time lapse video creation, and here are my thoughts about it:
Chronolapse was the best tool I've found to take sequential screenshots in a custom interval. I've set it up to take a screenshot every 30 seconds. Later I've tried with 60s interval, but it was not good for a game development timelapse. Go with 30s. [Also, I disable the option to print timestamp on the screenshots, as it's almost invisible at the end.]
Then I've taken VirtualDub to make a video from the screenshots at 10 FPS. The screenshots need to be numbered sequentially for VirtualDub detect the right sequence. You only open the first screenshot and VirtualDub imports the rest of the sequence. [Chronolapse has a built-in Renamer to convert the filenames to sequential integers.]
Finally I've edited the video on Sony Vegas to add fade in/out and include the background music. [Looking for an open-source video editting alternative? Try Shotcut!]
If you need an advice for the background music, I'd recommend musics like Frigia by Steve Moore. The music evolves over time, fitting well with time lapse.
That's it! Here you can see the result of this experience:
