Making Sense of Artificial Intelligence: Reality vs Hype

Making Sense of Artificial Intelligence: Reality vs Hype

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a transformative force, but it is surrounded by both excitement and exaggeration. While AI can now read, hear, and see, and even smell capabilities are on the horizon, its capabilities were once limited to mathematical and logical computations. This narrow scope is only one facet of the nine generally accepted types of human intelligence, yet it has already revolutionized our world. Now, imagine the impact of these expanded computer capabilities on our future.

Business leaders globally are apprehensive about the implications of AI on their operations—a concern that is valid. Those who have adopted AI are already seeing improved results. With substantial investment flowing into AI research and applications, a multitude of entrepreneurs are eager to capitalize on this trend, often presenting overly ambitious ideas. This creates a landscape filled with both genuine innovation and unrealistic dreams, which can be overwhelming for leaders not well-versed in technology. Some are feeling the pressure of falling behind, while others fear missing out (FOMO). This article aims to help business leaders discern between reality and hype and guide them on how to get started with AI.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI)

So, what exactly is Artificial Intelligence? AI refers to technology that enables machines to solve problems in ways that mimic human reasoning. At its core, AI allows computers to process vast amounts of historical data and act on new information based on this learning. AI can be broadly categorized into four types: Narrow AI, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Super AI, and Augmented AI.

Narrow AI: The Current State of AI

Narrow AI, or Real AI, encompasses all existing AI capabilities. Among the most notable are Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT), which are trained on extensive data from the internet using Large Language Models (LLMs). GPTs, such as ChatGPT, predict subsequent words in a sequence, enabling interactive dialogue. However, this capability is limited by the scope of internet data. Since not all human knowledge is available online and language is just one form of intelligence, these limitations must be considered when implementing AI.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

AGI represents the concept of machines matching or surpassing human intelligence across all tasks. AGI would be able to learn, understand, and autonomously improve to achieve mastery in any field. This level of AI remains a theoretical goal pursued by academics, entrepreneurs, and nations, but it is not yet a reality and its arrival is unpredictable.

Super AI: The Futuristic Scenario

Super AI refers to an intelligence that surpasses human capabilities, including emotions and morals, allowing it to act in its own best interests—akin to scenarios depicted in science fiction like "The Terminator." While this remains speculative, it underscores the profound impact advanced AI could have on humanity.

Augmented Intelligence: Practical AI for Today

Augmented intelligence involves using AI to enhance human decision-making. It operates on predefined rules or patterns, supporting humans by processing vast amounts of data more efficiently than we can. While some argue it is not true AI, its ability to improve decision-making by surfacing relevant information makes it highly valuable. Successful implementations often blend augmented intelligence with machine learning and GPT capabilities, offering significant business opportunities.

Navigating the Hype and Reality

Despite the rapid advancements in GPT technologies, they are limited by the quality and bias of internet data. This can lead to inaccurate or biased outputs. However, solution providers are actively addressing these challenges. Techniques like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) are enhancing AI's capabilities while maintaining data privacy.

To harness AI's potential, businesses should begin with augmented intelligence. This approach will highlight data quality issues and reveal gaps in data collection. Data is the new "gold," essential for maximizing AI's value. The principle "garbage in, garbage out" holds true: the quality of input data determines the efficacy of AI systems. Each business's unique market position, value proposition, and processes require tailored AI solutions.

Moving Forward with AI

AI implementations have brought forward complex issues such as governance, ethics, and the need for skilled talent. Future discussions will delve into these challenges.

I invite you to share your experiences and thoughts on leveraging AI in your business. Your journey and insights are valuable as we navigate this evolving landscape together.

Very insightful and kudos for being an early explorer in Insurance - I wish more of your peers looked into it as seriously. My experience with Generative AI is that it opens up new types of applications that are moving away from processing large Datasets, to automating generic tasks that typically require human judgement. For example, tasks such as OCR and spellchecking were once (in the 1990s!) considered difficult "intelligence" tasks that people were not sure we would ever get right. Now I can upload a photo to GPT-4o or Claude Sonnet and get a detailed description, a transcription, maybe even some advice. The LLM is leveraging a lot of training data, but is acting on very small quantities of application data, as opposed to more traditional ML where we base the model on mostly customer data. The LLM is like the hidden part of the data iceberg. Another key enabler is AI-as-a-Service, making it highly available for unspecialized application builders to create the application portion. There's a lot of AI hype, but properly used there are amazing possibilities!
