The Making of The Secret Firefly Garden

The Making of The Secret Firefly Garden

Trevi is excited to reveal the behind-the-scenes story of their upcoming event, The Secret Firefly Garden, taking place for one night only on Thursday, 28th November, at the serene Elizabethan Gardens in Plymouth. This event, part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, holds deep significance, not only for the women it honours but for the entire Plymouth community, thanks to the incredible local partnerships that have brought it to life.

The evening seeks to honour all those women affected by trauma and violence, with a focus on the resilient symbols at its heart: 200 handmade fireflies crafted with care at Plymouth’s own Theatre Royal Plymouth 's TR2 studios.

Thanks to the expertise of TR2’s dedicated team each of the fireflies has been meticulously machined and hand-finished to create a breathtaking display. Known internationally as a hub of creative innovation and technical excellence, TR2 has been instrumental in bringing Trevi’s vision to life, transforming the vision of fireflies as symbols of courage and hope into the one night only art installation. For Trevi, having TR2 on board has been essential in creating an installation that not only captivates visually but resonates deeply with its audience.

Head of Technical Design, Jason Steen describes the significance of the partnership: ‘At TR2 we design, build and install theatre scenery from the stages at TRP, to the West End and all over the world. However, as a local charity with our roots firmly in Plymouth, we believe it is vital to support other charities within our city. It has been a privilege to work alongside the great team at Trevi on this project to raise awareness and funding for the important work they do in our community.’

‘To be able to be part of the production of this incredibly powerful visual celebration has been an absolute honour. I have loved being part of the manufacturing of the fireflies installation, recognising the essential and unwavering support Trevi has provided to so many courageous women.’ Anna Whittall , Theatre Scenery Maker at TR2

Adding to this community connection, Kaya Gallery —a beloved local gallery on the historic Barbican, just a short stroll from the Elizabethan Gardens—will continue to support Trevi’s mission by selling the fireflies after the event with 100% of sales going to the charity. These keepsake fireflies offer a lasting reminder of the night’s message and allow the public to contribute directly to Trevi’s Sunflower Women’s Centre, which provides vital resources to women in need.

‘The Secret Firefly Garden is about bringing the community together, and we are so excited to stand with TR2, Kaya Gallery, and the people of Plymouth for this powerful statement of support for women’s resilience.’ Hannah Shead , CEO, Trevi
