Making sales fun : )
Friday 11/15/19...
I had an awesome conversation with someone yesterday. Amongst a number of things, we talked about our mutual hatred for sales. I've always said I suck at sales because I hate trying to close people.
That just sounds dirty coming out of my mouth, or ya know, through my pen (somehow worse, moving on). So when I reflect on what I do and where I've found myself, it sounds like a contradiction, but I absolutely love what I do!
So, let me back it up a bit...
My first job out of college was for a multi-level marketing firm. I was given a zip code and tasked with going door to door down Mainstreet to get past gatekeepers and close decision-makers in a single conversation.
It was a tough job and I developed a bad taste in my mouth for sales. It did teach me a lot though and it certainly helped to put me on this path.
Since then, I've bounced around between various sales and marketing roles, and in that time, I've better understood the parts of the role I DO enjoy.
I like helping people. I enjoy sharing my knowledge on a subject matter and seeing the difference it makes in someone's life. When I was younger, I thought I wanted to be a teacher because of it.
The thing is, I don't like to sell people. I like to help them, get to know them, and build an actual relationship with them. Most of what I do today is sales, but I love every minute of it.
I've developed a system that helps me automate all the hunting and grinding and get straight to the fun part. I get to be strategic and share ideas with people that they may not have thought of. I do this in all the calls I'm on, the private messages, comments, and even though the content I publish.
It's a pretty great feeling! I turned something I hate into something I love by cutting out all the bad parts and focusing on where I excel. I've somehow managed to make sales fun, and that's pretty cool : )
