How To Earn Revenue With 500 Subscribers on YouTube

Quite recently one of my clients hit the 500 subscriber mark with a 3000 watch time which is the holy grail for a new YouTube channel. It means as a creator you unlock new monetisation features, not all of them but some of them. New creators who gain a following quite rapidly, often find themselves in a situation where they don't fully maximise these new monetisation features and often waste this opportunity. It's when they hit the coveted 1000 subscriber mark they tend to take notice and start to think about adjusting their content strategy. As experienced creators will know, you can't solely rely on YouTube ads any more - the market is too saturated and volatile. Demonetisation is also a bit of a nightmare, so creator channels know you have to find other sources of income to make the YouTube business economic. Gone are the days when you would upload a cat playing a piano video, go viral and then retire in the Maldives.

What I am trying to say is; don't waste the 500 Subscriber monetisation features!
The 500 subscriber mark is a perfect way for creators to earn revenue whilst you await for the full features to unlock - it just means tweaking your content strategy. I'll give two key ways you can maximise the 500 subscriber features and potentially earn £1000's.
1. Channel Membership - This is a seriously underrated tool! If you turn this feature on you can set different tier levels for membership subscriptions offering different perks to paid subscribers. This includes content, shoutouts, and live streams among others. The reason why this is such a great tool is that as a new creator, your early free subscribers will be your dedicated fans, they will want to see the channel grow and are invested in you, so will most likely pay for a channel membership where you are creating extra content. You can take advantage of this by looking at what you offer in the fremium level of your channel and then figure out what more you can offer that is valuable and what people would pay for. Your free content then acts as a gateway to your paid content. It works like this - people get a thirst for your content in the free section whether that be education content entertainment content or both (in TV we call it edutainment) you then convert these people who want more into paid subscribers. They are happy because they get more of you, and you're happy because you are finally earning revenue on YouTube. Yay!

2. Supers - Some of you reading this have probably never heard of Supers. When YouTube first introduced it, I personally thought they were trying to be something they're not i.e. Snapchat or TikTok but as they rolled this feature out, I fully got it! People love to engage, that's what social media is about. Now, whenever I create YouTube channels or strategise for a client, I always talk about maximising every tool the platform offers you. In this case Live Streams. I always advise adding Lives into your content strategy, in the beginning, you won't get much from it, you don't have an audience and so, it feels strange to create a live stream with no one in the audience. However, as you grow - your community want to engage. They are thirsty for it. So Engage, I really advise it. Also, if you're not getting people on the live stream, just remember it's not wasted because Live Streams can still be watched by viewers afterwards, so it's all content at the end of the day. Supers, allow viewers to buy stickers and have their messages highlighted within the chat. My client would benefit majorly from this as their YouTube Channel is about business consultancy, so in their lives, they are offering live taster coaching tutorials. I guarantee you that when they do their next live stream and enable Supers they will get at least one person paying for a super chat. Think about adding live streams into your content strategy from the beginning, in the short term and long run it will pay off.

Bonus Tip - If you are a business that sells products, you do get the function to add shopping discoverability. This should be well thought about in your content strategy from the beginning, as you build your community and following on YouTube, they should know that you have products. The YouTube community love authenticity, so don't be shy about telling your audience that you have a product that you are selling and in fact asking them to show some love and purchase a product, you'd be surprised how much support the YouTube community gives to a creator they believe in.

?So, if you are thinking about making that jump and creating a YouTube channel, then plan for the short, medium and long term. I would put this stage as the medium term, and so planning your content strategy around these features can really lift your channel and get you to start earning revenue.
