Making our world a little smaller: A conversation with James Sarvis

Making our world a little smaller: A conversation with James Sarvis

“At a time when there seems to be so much division in society, worldwide, I can’t think of a better job for those who believe in diversity and who would like to make our world a little smaller.” James Sarvis, Delta Air Lines V.P. of Global Cleanliness

We recently had the privilege of speaking with Delta’s V.P. of Global Cleanliness, James Sarvis, about his 49-year long career journey at Delta Air Lines. Here’s what he had to say about his untraditional path in aviation, the challenges and rewards of his role as a V.P., and what keeps him climbing at Delta nearly 50 years later.

Q: There are 90,000+ reasons to join Delta—every one of our employees has their own. What’s yours?

A: I started my career in aviation at only 19, not because of extensive research or deep knowledge of the company but, because of a recommendation by my 6th grade teacher who was married to a Delta leader. ?As time passed, leaders invested in me and helped me see a better future for me and my family.

This is an organization where care for each other, honesty, integrity, and respect are paramount. ?One where it is an honor to be a servant leader for our employees and our customers. The special culture, or secret sauce as we call it, was present when I started in 1974 and very much alive in 2023!

Q: You did not have a “traditional” career journey. Can you tell us more about your career at Delta Air Lines and why you’ve been a proud member of the Delta family for 49 years?

A: I started with Delta cleaning toilets. ?Recognizing that we were a meritocracy I realized that rather than being disappointed with my role, I had to be the best toilets cleaner. ?This drive toward quality resulted in acknowledgement and better opportunities.

Through the years I worked in every position within the airport services organization, both as a frontline employee and later as a leader. This broader view of the workplace led to promotions and special assignments within the U.S. and abroad. ?Besides the airport roles, I have had the privilege of working in Cargo, Sales, Alliances, Reservations, Marketing, In-Flight Services, and supporting our partner airline, AeroMexico. ?It has been very special to work with the best aviation group in the world, truly a special family. ?It is indeed true that when you love what you do you have not worked a day in your life. ?My wife Candy, and our children and grandchildren, cannot be more thankful for this beautiful journey.

Q: We are guided by the belief that connecting the world is the most important work there is. That our purpose is to erase the distance that separates us. And that the farther we go, the closer we land. What advice/recommendations would you give to someone looking to begin a career in the aviation field?

A: Aviation is the consummate team sport. ?It takes a very large number of people, with the most varied backgrounds, roles, and responsibilities, to complete each mission. ?This brings unlimited job opportunities. At a time when there seems to be so much division in society, worldwide, I can’t think of a better job for those who believe in diversity and who would like to make our world a little smaller. ?

Q: What is the most rewarding thing about being VP of Global Cleanliness? What is the most challenging thing??

A: Global Cleanliness was created in response to the challenges that we faced as a result of the pandemic. ?Cleanliness had always been in our DNA here at Delta but, during COVID, it took a more critical role - one where safety, health and cleanliness were all intertwined. ?The members of the team were all handpicked for their experience and professionalism as well as for the determination and courage necessary to help Delta through the difficult period. This is the team that I have the honor and privilege to work with every day. ?

In today’s less challenging post-pandemic environment, we have had to redirect all of our team’s energy and passion toward protecting “Clean” as an important brand promise. ?Although customers are not verbalizing clean in the same manner as before, it is important to recognize that we have set a standard that is clearly an expectation, one that we must deliver on every day.?

Q: September 15 – October 15 is Latin & Hispanic Heritage Month, a month-long celebration of the contributions people of Latin and Hispanic descent make in the U.S. Why is this month important to you and what do you do to celebrate?

A: I am very proud to represent the Hispanic community in my officer role within a Fortune 500 company and, with equal pride, as a contributing citizen within our Atlanta community. ?In my years at Delta Air Lines, I have seen the number of Hispanic employees grow from only a few to a very significant number. ?This is evidence of the value that we bring, the strong work ethic, and the adventurous spirit that sets us apart. I join our Business Resource Group, Adelante, in this month of recognition and celebrations.

There are 90,000+ reasons to join Delta—every one of our employees has their own. Some of us want to explore new places. Some are here to explore our own career potential. Some are curious about other cultures, while others want to make a difference where they are. There’s a whole world out there—and another one right here within Delta. Which means that whatever keeps you climbing, you’ll discover it with us.
