Making networking more fun: less coffee/drinks meetups and more chatty miles!

Would you say yes to going for a run vs a coffee meetup with someone new?

Last year I was introduced to Leanne Hughes by my dear friend Andy Storch . What caught my attention in Andy's note connecting the two of us was that Leanne was an avid runner, and with that in mind, I decided to take a unique approach to our introduction.

Leanne was in New York City for a week due to work, and not just any week: it was the week of the New York City Marathon!? Seizing the opportunity to meet, I proposed the idea of meeting for a casual run in Central Park. Emphasizing the importance of keeping it easy, I mentioned my upcoming participation in the NYC Marathon and assured her that there would be no sprinting involved!

Surprisingly, Leanne agreed, and as we jogged a loop in Central Park, we engaged in conversation, sharing anecdotes about ourselves, with occasional tidbits about the upcoming marathon, even stopping to take pictures near the marathon finish line. It was a refreshing departure from the typical coffee or drinks meetup. Leanne even expressed gratitude for the unique suggestion (and to be included in the energy surrounding the marathon).

Pre run smiles before the miles

There's something about the psychological safety that comes when you're side by side with someone versus looking them in the eyes. It felt more authentic, and it was nice to get some miles in while making a new friend!

Cheers to more enjoyable runs and engaging conversations in 2024! ??

What's your go-to non-coffee/drinks activity when meeting new connections in person?

I was OVER THE MOON when you suggested some chatty miles, Megan Bickle! Best way to meet a new person, see some great sights, and get that heart rate up. Thank you for the brilliant idea, was so awesome meeting you this week and getting all the NYC shake-out run scoops! (And yes, wouldn’t have happened if Andy Storch hadn’t instigated the connection, thanks mate!)

That is awesome! I'm usually panting too hard to chat when I'm running so that's out. ?? A good cup of coffee is my go-to.
