Making Mzansi Pop

As a designer and illustrator deeply influenced by the world around me, I find that social commentary is the core of my creative process.

Through digital illustrations, I have redefined how South African and global culture intersect, ensuring that local stories resonate on a broader scale. My work thrives at the intersection of design, culture, and conversation and I think that's really dope. Social media has given me a platform to amplify my thoughts, but more importantly, it has allowed me to connect with people on a deeper level through shared experiences and reflections on society, my society, my Mzansi. Oh - I've won an award for it too :-p

I’ve always believed that design isn’t just about aesthetics but about communication - I guess that's why it's called Visual Communication, lol. When I create, I tap into what’s happening in the world—be it social justice movements, pop culture or everyday struggles - and translate that into visuals that provoke thought and inspire dialogue. The beauty of social media is that it’s an ongoing conversation, and I’m merely adding my voice to the chorus, albeit in my own way.

My use of bold colours, signature painted-style typography, and detailed illustrations isn’t just a stylistic choice but a strategic one. I want my work to be instantly recognizable in the endless scroll of a feed, serving as a visual call to pause, reflect, and engage.

Pieces from my Davetionary Series

From working with major companies on campaigns that highlight social issues to partnering with grassroots movements that drive change, these collaborations allow me to expand my reach and make a more significant impact.

I want my work to be instantly recognizable in the endless scroll of a feed, serving as a visual call to pause, reflect, and engage.

Social commentary through design is, for me, a form of activism. It’s about holding up a mirror to society and asking, “What do you see? And how can we change it?” So I guess when my work is shared, liked, or sparks a meaningful conversation, it reminds me that art has the power to connect us. In a world overflowing with content, creating work that makes people feel seen and understood remains my greatest motivation.

It's rewarding seeing how people interpret my art - how it resonates differently with each person based on their own journey and worldview.

My work interpreted differently by top agency; Clockwork

By integrating humour, nostalgia, and social commentary, I create art that speaks to the now while archiving the moments that define a generation. Whether through limited-edition t-shirts, visual language of modern pop culture.

From vibrant tributes to cultural icons to collaborations with major brands, my art reflects the dynamic energy of contemporary African identity. I’ve had the privilege of working with influential companies, shaping how brands connect with diverse audiences. My work doesn’t just decorate timelines—it starts dialogues, inspires movements, and makes pop culture feel seen in an authentic, unapologetic way.

I create digital art that speaks to the now while archiving the moments that define a generation.

Pop culture is ever-evolving, and as an illustrator, I see my role as both an observer and a participant—using my art to document, inspire, and influence. My goal is always to challenge perspectives, celebrate identity, and bring an authentic South African voice to the global creative scene.
