Making a move - One day, or Day one?

Making a move - One day, or Day one?

In life, timing is everything and at some point you need to choose to turn your "One day" into "Day one".

"The important thing is not being afraid to take a chance. Remember, the greatest failure is to not try."—Debbi Fields

One of the most common conversations I have with candidates is about it being "the right time" to make a move and I totally understand, but how do we give ourselves the best chance to get the timing right.

Signs it might be the right time:

  • You have the dread on Sunday nights
  • You feel like you're going through the motions
  • You aren't learning or lack a mentor
  • You can't see your next career step

Here's what I always suggest.

Always be open to a conversation, hear about what opportunities are out there and you'll have a much better perspective on what's going on in the market.

Over time you'll get a better idea what's interesting to you, maybe it's the technology or domain or maybe it's flexibility and autonomy?

This is even easier if you find a recruiter you trust, someone who knows your market and has experience working with people in your position. (I know I biased) Ask them questions, push for details and tell them your priorities so that when that opportunity arises you'll be the first to know.

I've lost count of the number of times I've had a conversation with someone about their ideal role only to have something very similar pop up a few months later!

"No one can discover you until you do. Exploit your talents, skills and strengths and make the world sit up and take notice." - Rob Liano

So next time you get a call from myself or one of the VANRATH team, hear us out, you never know what's out there and worst case scenario you'll know a bit more about the market and have a connection that might be useful in the future.

All conversations are 100% confidential and it might just open some doors you didn't even know were out there!
