Making the Most of LinkedIn

Making the Most of LinkedIn

Twice a month I take the time to review LinkedIn profiles for free. I’ve had the honor now of reviewing over 100 profiles and there are some consistent things that need improvement on most LinkedIn profiles. Here are a few quick ways to improve your LinkedIn profile and visibility.

1. Put Your Best Face Forward:

Profile pictures should be pictures of you alone, in at least business casual wear. High quality selfies are fine, but it should have good lighting. If you can’t afford a professional headshot, try pairing up with another professional to take pictures of one another.

2. Headlines Matter:

Headlines should be short but descriptive. For example a student may include “Seeking Entry-Level Power Engineering Position” or “New Graduate Nurse Seeking Opportunities.” Experienced professionals should include a title that describes their most used skills, and doesn’t need to include the company unless your networking is for that company (sales).

3. Summaries are Searchable:

Include skills in your summary section that you are able to do proficiently without mentoring or supervision. Software skills are especially valuable so make sure you include those! Attach projects or other writing sample to this section to help demonstrate professional skills that employers will value, or a printable version of your resume.

4. Recommendations set you apart:

Ask supervisors, coworkers, professors, classmates, internship supervisors, and anyone else who knows you professionally to write you a high quality recommendation. Aim for 3-5 of these. This is probably the best use of your time on LinkedIn because it provides outside verification of your skills, both technical and interpersonal.

5. Post Smart:

Post industry relevant articles or blog posts twice a month if you are not job searching and, if you are, twice a week. This kind of content will increase your visibility to your network as well as providing you an opportunity to hone your expertise.
