Miracles in Social Media : Sex Trafficking and #glittergreen

I woke up today feeling extremely inspired by the thought of a past encounter, and I’d like to share.

A few years ago I attended a youth ministry conference called Passion, based in Atlanta GA. This event hosted 50,000 Christian young adults from around the globe, who came together with the goal of bringing awareness to sex trafficking.  For example: Did you know that sex trafficking is more prevalent now than ever before in history?

Given the magnitude of our group, we were then subdivided, where I was sent to work with a team called “Glitter Green”. The group next to us was being rather loud, so we Tweeted them nicely and asked if they could please quite down. We ended the Tweets with #glittergreen.

Within the hour, #glittergreen became ‘Trending’ nationally, and people from all over were inquiring about #glittergreen. This was an unlikely, but ultimate chance to share our story and shed light onto this devastating issue occurring in our back yard.

As the Tweets grew, so did the recognition. Within a few more hours, President Obama contacted Passion and pledged to dedicate the month of January to 'National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month’.  How cool is that - Simply because 50 people hashtagged the word #glittergreen, there is now an entire month dedicated to preventing and raising awareness for sex trafficking!

With every post, comment, or tweet, you can make a difference. Further, every post, comment, or tweet you don't make might also have an impact.  A very thankful, but confused survivor replied after being saved from years of slavery “If this is true what you say, and you do love us, what took you so long?”.

Still don’t think your simple post or email can make a large scale difference? Think again, and then go for it. "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right." - Henry Ford.

Thank you,
