The Making of Find Your Force

On May 4th, Headspace and Star Wars brought fans less stress, improved focus, and better sleep at lightspeed. In support of Mental Health Awareness Month and alignment with Star Wars Celebration, Star Wars fans are now able to escape to a restful galaxy unlike anything they’ve experienced before.

We wanted to share what goes on behind the scenes at Headspace, so we asked Ryan Cox, our Senior Designer to answer a few questions. Ryan helped pioneer the look and feel for all of Headspace’s content for this Star Wars partnership.?

1. Can you explain the design process / approach for this project?

The initial question we had to figure out: how do we bring the Star Wars universe into the Headspace universe - using our distinct visual language - in a way that feels authentic? Luckily, Star Wars is so iconic (an obvious understatement) - and our brand ingredients are so warm & inviting - it all came together very nicely.

?2. Did you have any specific creative goals in mind for this partnership?

For me, it was all about keeping it fun & approachable. And simple.

3. Where did you find inspiration?

The movies were obviously the source material. Having grown up with the characters (I'm 108 years old), I had a built-in familiarity - which allowed me (and many others on the team) to hit the ground running.

4. Were there any design challenges you faced when working on this partnership?

I think for a lot of us, it was important to get the details right. With this partnership, we knew we'd be speaking to Star Wars fans - so we wanted the design to feel accurate. When creating the illustrations, everything was deliberate and considered. Working with Disney was a treat - and they were especially helpful in keeping us correct.

5. How are these designs unique to the Headspace brand?

I don't think you'll find a chiller Chewbacca.

This has really captured my teenager's imagination! He enjoyed sleepcasts as nice way to unwind and sleep when he was younger. These have reminded him how good they were.

Kudos to a job well done on this project, Headspace team! Thank you bringing the element of fun to mindfulness. This Star Wars fan was most delighted to open my Headspace app and see "Breathe with Yoda" the morning of 5/4! I'm enjoying the Star Wars (x-wing voyage) sleepcasts as well! Thank you!
