Making E-Scooters Safer for All with Universal Sounds

As exciting as the boom of e-scooters and micromobility options has been, it has also raised valid concerns—especially surrounding pedestrian safety. Reports of accidents and collisions, though still minimal, remain a worrying trend as adoption spreads globally.

Now, an international collaborative research team has set its sights on improving safety and accessibility through standardized e-scooter sounds. Backed by mobility leader Dott, U.K.’s University of Salford, and the Italian Union of the Blind, the project aims to devise universal sounds that enhance e-scooter visibility to nearby pedestrians and vulnerable road users.

Ongoing field tests are having blind volunteers, riders, and pedestrians evaluate various potential audible signals using VR simulations. The goal is to land on preferable sounds that alert people to e-scooter proximity without adding to urban noise pollution.

Once finalized, the open-source sounds would be available for adoption across the entire micromobility industry. For instance, a distinct ticking noise could indicate e-scooters travelling slowly in crowded areas while a sci-fi-esque whirring sound could mark higher speeds on roads.

Such a consistent set of sounds stands to minimally impact the overall experience while going a long way in improving safety for all stakeholders. As the global embrace of shared micromobility options accelerates, the time is now to build inclusivity into these transformative urban mobility platforms.
