Nelson Mandela said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
A powerful quote which we truly resonate with at Liberty Two Degrees as we reflect on the importance of giving back to our communities and supporting those in need. Today, not only do we honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela and his tireless efforts for equality, justice and human rights, but it is also a time to heed to the national call to action of serving others and spreading even the smallest acts of kindness – which have a powerful influence in creating a better world.
Each of us has the ability to contribute to positive change, not only for today, but every day. By embodying the spirit of Ubuntu, we can create a more inclusive, just and compassionate society. In line with our CSI strategy, which focuses on education, youth development and community development, this Mandela Day our malls have dedicated their 67 minutes and beyond in the effort to combat poverty and inequality.
Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square are supporting Rays of Hope by refurbishing the edu-centre and counselling centre. This will assist the organisation to continue to provide educational programmes and counselling to the Alexandra community. As access to quality education remains a crucial determinant of future opportunities, the mall’s initiative will empower Rays of Hope to create a nurturing learning environment that fosters the potential of young learners in Alexandra.
Eastgate Shopping Centre held its 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day exhibition following the resounding response in 2023. In the lead up to Mandela Day, Liberty Promenade put its weight behind eight local charities who did much-needed work in the surrounding community. The campaign titled ‘Post with Purpose’ entailed a month-long drive to raise awareness of the tremendous work being done by numerous organisations, all of which contribute to the local communities around the mall in remarkable ways. In a heartwarming Mandela Day initiative, the Liberty Promenade Centre Management team paid a special visit to Hannah’s Place of Safety, a loving home for abandoned and abused babies under the age of 1.

This year, Liberty Midlands Mall is rallying people in Pietermaritzburg to make a difference by donating food for the Mama Ntombi’s Community Projects, who do much needed work with underprivileged children in the area. On Mandela day, the mall team will be visiting the centre to hand over the items collected.
