Making a Difference through Tutoring

Many of us take for granted the ways that our small actions can make a large difference in the lives of others. Are you ready to make a big impact? If yes, then ALTA invites you to become a volunteer tutor.??

The process of becoming a tutor includes a short but impactful training programme to prepare volunteers for their journey with ALTA. Here are a few words from some of our ALTA Tutor trainees expressing their takeaways from the programme.??

An eye-opening experience??

“It has been really eye-opening for me in terms of unlearning a lot of habits that I would have picked up along the way. For me, I also feel like it’s looking at things with a very fresh set of eyes. One of the things that I enjoy most though are the exercises that we do because not only are we learning to do it, but we will be teaching it very soon, so we know first-hand exactly what we are supposed to be doing and looking out for.”???

We are working together?

“I’m basically unlearning a lot that I’ve learnt and starting afresh. I think this is such a great programme for anyone that is interested in learning the right thing, to do it the right way. What I love most of all is the group work that we’ve been doing where we have been partnered with maybe two or three persons, just working together, and doing the lessons. So far what I’ve enjoyed the most is the interactions with the tutors—very engaging.”?

A very humbling experience?

“Thus far, I have found this training programme to be a very humbling experience. I am learning quite a bit and I ask myself; how did I learn as a child and how did that learning translate into who I am as an adult? I am developing a lot of new competencies and thus far, it has been an exceedingly rewarding experience.? I am also enjoying the ability to work with my peers so that there is mutual learning as we become tutors for ALTA.?“?

They put us in the shoes of students?

“The facilitators, they interact with us in such a way that they actually show us the side of the student that we are going to be helping. They showed us the difficulties that the students will have so that we can identify with what’s happening, and we will know where to help them and how to deal with the situation. I enjoy that the most. My favourite thing is when they put us in the shoes of the person that we will be helping so that we know what to face and what we will be able to help them with.”???

  • Cheryl-Ann Williams?

It’s so fun?

“I thought that this programme was just going to be, you sit, and you do some work and that would be it. But it’s really very interactive, it’s engaging, and it is fun. Who would even think that this would be so much fun? I am having an awesome time learning about how we can really benefit our students and how we can take what we learn from this programme to make it good for our students and to help them develop their literacy abilities.” ??

  • Delise Thomas??

To become a volunteer, you should have an English qualification of Grade II or higher in CSEC or GCE A, B or C. Tutors must be available two hours twice a week for the academic year 2024-2025. Alta classes and Reading Circles are spread across the country with 22 class venues.??
