Making a Difference

Making a Difference

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to make a huge impact on the world?

Many people have considered it at least one point in their lives. As a child you may have wanted to grow up and become famous – maybe through being a movie star, a singer in a pop group or a famous author.

But the older you get, the more you forget this dream, and face “reality”. Why is that?

When you were a child, you were probably told the word ‘No’ a lot, right? That’s perfectly normal, it’s what helps you learn and grow. You can’t always get what you want. However, most young children hear the word “No” more times than they hear yes.

That’s understandable as toddlers are curious and parents jobs are to keep them safe and not let them stick their fingers in the plug, or touch the hot coffee cup, or pull the cats tail and get scratched.

However, when it becomes the automatic response to any request as the child grows, it can have long lasting effects on the self esteem and sense of possibility.

At some point, people start saying ‘no’ to themselves, sometimes even without realising. They limit themselves, because they have grown up hearing limiting language. And so they don’t think they can achieve certain things, and they don’t believe that they can make a difference.

Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever thought that you’re ‘not important enough,’ ‘not special enough’.

The Mosquito

If you have ever felt too small to make a difference, imagine you’re in a room alone with a mosquito. Do you think you would notice the mosquito?

Would the mosquito make a difference to your night? Of course, it would. You probably wouldn’t sleep until you had tracked it down and squished it, right?

Maybe comparing yourself to a mosquito in a room isn’t the most charming scenario, but it makes the point – anyone can make a difference in the world, no matter how big or small.

I remember the first time someone who had heard me speak crossed a road to come and tell me that she had moved country and jobs and was living her best life, because of something I had said.

Now, if I am honest, I didn’t really remember her and I didn’t remember the exact words I had said. But she did. And that is the point.

Anyone who’s previously made an impact on the world had to start off somewhere, and usually start off small.

It’s all about taking that first step.

How YOU Can Make a Difference

Making a difference starts with believing in yourself and having a strong sense of purpose and a passion for what you want to do. For example, if you want to become a motivational speaker, you have to really want it, and put the effort and time into it.

What is it that you care about or feel passionate about? If you talk about something you like, you’ll enjoy researching, practising and delivering your talk.

Plus, if your audience recognises that you’re passionate, they’ll feel more inclined to listen – they’ll be intrigued as to why you’re passionate, and what it is about the subject matter that could appeal to them.

Why is this important?

Because if you can get a clear and concise message across to your audience, they’ll remember you, and what you said. Thus, making a difference to their lives and to the lives of other people. Like the lady I was talking about earlier, who was making a difference to others being a passionate tour guide.

The better speaker you become, the more memorable and inspiring you’ll be. As someone who loves both speaking AND listening to other incredible speakers, I can promise you that there’s nothing more motivational than a good story.

So why not share yours?
