Making a difference?
How are your new hires today?
When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful. A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical….”
We all know Logical Song. What many don’t realize is that it’s a story about a young Roger Hodgson (the composer) who entered the boarding school system full of hope and optimism, only for the system to suck it out of him by showing him a world where he could become so “dependable, clinical, cynical.” And this process continued to the point where you’d have to….
“……watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, Liberal, fanatical, criminal. Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable……”
A lot of people argue that our educational systems stifles creativity and individuality. Can the same be true with our very own companies? While we spend a great deal of money and effort on finding the right employees and managers and in the onboarding experience, how long does it take for new recruits to settle into the grind and want (or maybe need) to be like everybody else?
I’m not advocating a revolution here, as keeping your job is important. But maybe if companies would allow employees, and managers, a little more room to promote change for the better - progress, change, and transformation can truly happen.
“It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.”
- Steve Jobs
Have a great day everybody! Make a difference, and allow others to make a difference too.
